For Ky Ngo, credibility by association

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

There’s something funny in Ky Ngo’s emails. On Thursday, when the leader of the protests in front of Nguoi Viet Daily News was supposedly out on some “secret mission” relating to some hush-hush anti-communist activities in Vietnam (read here), he didn’t miss out on the Internet. While absent, he still sent out several mass emails claiming victory in court.

Victory?? Yes, that’s what he said. In one of his missives Thursday, he included the AP’s story (this one) about the issuance of preliminary injunction against him. Read more here. The text of his email actually claims victory because the judge didn’t bar anyone from protesting.

No, that’s not the funny part. Ngo and his supporters have been claiming that “victory” for days.

The funny part is that, on the cutline to his picture, Ky Ngo bold-faced the photographer’s name: AP Photo/Nick Ut. See picture above.

Nick Ut is, of course, the man who took one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century - the Napalm girl.

In the text of his email, Ky Ngo bragged that his photo was taken by Nick Ut, “winner of the Pulitzer Prize.” And he went on to describe Nick Ut’s achievements.

Geez, is that what it takes? Name dropping? How ’bout this: Here’s a picture the Bolsavik took of Nick Ut when former President Bill Clinton came to Santa Ana College campaigning for Senator Hillary Clinton.

(The Bolsavik had written about the presidential visit in his Vietnamese blog here.)
