Twenty intermediate-school students from the Garden Grove Unified School District, of whom 8 have identifiable Vietnamese surnames, will be honored by local Masons. The awards ceremony on April 30 is a part of Public Schools Week activities. Read the GGUSD’s press release here.

The award recipients include, from Alamitos Intermediate School, Monica Nguyen; from Bell, Daniel Tran; from Doig, Phuc Ngo; from Irvine, Ngoc Bich Cao and John H. Do; from Jordan, Silvia Tran and Westin Vuong; from McGarvin, Courtney Truong.

The Garden Grove USD covers most of Garden Grove and portions of six surrounding cities - Anaheim, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Stanton, and Westminster. The entirety of what is commonly considered the “Vietnamese area,” including the commercial area known as Little Saigon, falls within the GGUSD. Three out of five members of the Board of GGUSD are Vietnamese-American: Lan Quoc Nguyen, Trung Nguyen and KimOanh Nguyen-Lam.

This photo was sent out in a mass email by Cung The Tran, one of the most prominent protesters against Nguoi Viet daily news and also one of three defendants named in the newspaper’s lawsuit.

The Bolsavik will not comment on what the photo looks like lest he be validating Godwin’s Law. What it actually is, is a vote at a Sunday meeting in Little Saigon to approve the slate of leaders for a new organization called the “Force to Protect the Yellow Flag,” referencing the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam).

Side bar: This is not the first nor the only organization with “Yellow Flag” in its name. There’s also a “Committee to Protect the Yellow Flag” that has been going around advocating local governments to pass resolutions honoring the Yellow Flag as the flag of the Vietnamese American community. One leader of the “Committee” is Lan Quoc Nguyen, an ally of Van Thai Tran and member of the Garden Grove School Board. One such resolution was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger. The signing ceremony was the one in which supervisorial candidate Trung Nguyen would later Photoshop his head to be next to the Governator. That particular resolution, however, was signed right before the 2006 elections, and because of campaigning needs, the “Committee” ceded all lobbying credit to Lynn Daucher.

The “Force to Protect the Yellow Flag” links together two protest groups: The group protesting Nguoi Viet, and the group (among them: Long Pham, candidate for OC Board of Education and wannabe protest leader) that has been organizing other protests such as protesting a dead musician accused of being communist.
