Madison Nguyen did not make Clinton delegate slate

San Jose City Councilwoman Madison Nguyen (photo), fresh from a bruising battle over the naming of a stretch of street in her district, failed to make the cut to be a Clinton delegate at the National Democratic Convention in Denver in July, the San Jose Mercury News reports here.

Sunday was the day the Democratic party held caucuses to name the delegates. Back in March, California held its presidential primary election. The result of that election determines how many delegates each Democratic candidate gets for each congressional district, plus another batch of delegates based on state-wide results. Sunday’s caucus was to name specific delegates based on the district-by-district at allocation. Another caucus will be held in May to name delegates based on statewide allocation.

Madison Nguyen spearheaded efforts to convince her colleagues on the city council to designate a stretch of Story Road to be a Vietnamese business area. Prior to her efforts, no other ethnic group has succeeded in naming bits and parts of the city for themselves. However, when it came time to assign a specific name, Madison’s compromise of “Saigon Business District” is accused of being a communist ploy. Thousands came to protest, and Ly Tong held a hunger strike. Read the collection of Bolsavik entries on this issue by clicking here.

Madison Nguyen entered the caucus and ran into her nemesis Bryan Do, one of the main organizers of protest against her. Do was seen lobbying about 40 other Vietnamese-Americans not to vote for Madison. Predictably, she didn’t win a slot.

But neither do two other high-ranking office holders. Also not selected were Santa Clara County Assessor Larry Stone and Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager.
