Hoa Van Tran’s staff arrested for attempted murder (but he did file amended report)

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Two of Hoa Van Tran’s campaign workers were arrested on attempted murder charges, reveals the Register in a story by Tony Saavedra and Peggy Lowe here.

The two, Jorge Luis Valle (pictured, on the left) and Cesar “Youngster” Valle (on the right), are currently held at the notorious Theo Lacy jail. Jorge in his booking form filled out under occupation: “President.” See it here. What the hell?

Jorge faces chages of attempted murder, discharge of firearm at a dwelling, and street terrorism. Cesar is accused of being an accessory after the fact. They both face enhancement for being gang members.

The arrest happened on April 9, just a few hours after the two came back from a Hoa Van Tran fundraiser at the Original Mike’s in Santa Ana. The picture above was taken at that fundraiser. Apparently Jorge was arguing with someone and then shortly after shot at their car.

Anti-communists trade barbs

Monday, May 19th, 2008

The war of words just keeps escalating. On Saturday, the day Nguoi Viet’s paper came out, Garden Grove School Board member Lan Quoc Nguyen went on radio and called for Vietnamese to vote against Janet Nguyen because she is supposed to be, well, you know, like everyone else, a commie. On Sunday, another red baiting group hit back, calling the first authors traitors.

APIAVote’s presidential townhall

Monday, May 19th, 2008

The APIAVote’s presidential town hall took place as scheduled at UCI’s Bren Events Center on Sunday. When it was first planned, it was going to be an exciting and important part of the presidential candidates’ efforts to reach out to the Asian Pacific Islander American voters.

However, as history unfolded, John McCain is now the Republican nominee, Barrack Obama is winning the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton is barely hanging on, and California still looks solidly in the blue column.

The APIAVote town hall still went forward, but none of the presidential candidates came.

Hillary appeared by live satelite feed, but she just read from a prepared text. The prepared text contains answers to questions sent by APIAVote, but it’s still just prepared text.

Obama couldn’t be reached on TV, so he called in by phone, and answered live questions from selected members of the API community.

McCain was busy getting ready for Saturday Night Live, so he sent a surrogate to speak live to the audience, California Assemblyman Van Tran.

The Bolsavik was there, and he met this really cool Viet dude who works for Asiaxpress.com. His name is Joe Nguyen, and he blogged live from the event.

Read his report — or rather, reports — and see his super cool pix, here. SORRY, link doesn’t work any more. The host (blogger.com) blocked Joe’s site for alleged violation of the TOS. Don’t see how, though.

Oh, and by the way:

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN THE UPCOMING JUNE 3 PRIMARY ELECTIONS. (If you have registered before, you don’t need to re-register. But if you haven’t, register now. You can decide later whether to actually vote. :-) )

Altar on a truck

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Here are the latest pictures of the altar to South Vietnam’s military dead placed by Ky Ngo at the protest against Nguoi Viet. It was first put up around the time of Vietnamese New Year (”Tet”) in early February, and has been at the site ever since.
