Nguoi Viet Daily News, the largest Vietnamese-language paper in Little Saigon, on the day after the election sent its reporters out to get quotes from all candidates, winners and losers alike.
The one assigned to Janet Nguyen (pictured at her first swearing-in) came back with nothing. He even spent nearly 5 hours calling everybody he knew trying to get someone to convince Janet to talk to him, to no avail.
It’s just the latest action by Janet Nguyen and her camp to show their displeasure at Nguoi Viet’s shenanigans.
The straw that broke Janet’s patience was apparently when Nguoi Viet accused Janet of being a communist, in a prominent two-page spread accompanied by huge photos.
The op-ed was signed by leaders of the protest organizer “Coalition Against Resolution 36,” but everyone who’s ever had contact with those three signers knew they weren’t capable of writing anything like that. The op-ed also purports to disclose the contents of some hush-hush secret meeting between Janet’s policy advisor Nick Lecong and the top management of Nguoi Viet – and that’s why the Bolsavik called it, and will continue to call it, a piece by Nguoi Viet.
A few days later, Janet’s chief of staff Andrew Do sent in a response. Nguoi Viet inexplicably refused to print it, without providing any reason.
More than a week later, after Janet’s camp had publicized both its response and Nguoi Viet’s refusal to print it, Nguoi Viet then printed Do’s letter accompanied by a counter-response, also purportedly by the Coalition Against Resolution 36.
Janet’s camp began to hit back. At her press conference (here), her staff asked Nguoi Viet’s reporter to “leave if you have any self-respect.”
The morning after the election, Janet came with Andrew Do and Nick Lecong, and together they paid respect at the altar set up by Ky Ngo, the lead anti-Nguoi Viet protester. The same altar referred to here and here.
And, as mentioned above, she’s not talking to Nguoi Viet’s reporters.
Maybe calling people “communist” is way below the belt and far over the line, especially someone who hasn’t done anything to you.
Or maybe calling people “communist” is no longer the costless stunt that it once was.
Or maybe both.
I’ve been really disappointed with the way Nguoi Viet has handled itself in the face of adversity. The firing of the Bolsavik, the coverage of this election, and the general way they dealt with pressure from protesters. They are the leading voice in our community and should stand up for what is right. Instead they allowed a very small group of people, not representative of our community at all, dictate their actions and positions. In the future, people will know that if they pressure Nguoi Viet enough, they will get their way. This is not the position NV should be in. Show some backbone damn it!
In the recently months Nguoi Viet has gotten worse and worse. They don’t get their acts together, they wont’ be around for too long, if they still do, it wouldn’t be the same. I think they should learn to stay neutral and report news the way it’s meant to be reported. They’ve been known in recent months to be printing unverified and unethical materials so I don’t care to read it any more.

Bao Nguoi Viet is not making the living by selling the paper subscription. Their business model is based on those little ads for Homes, nails, etc….at $15 a pop for 3 days. During Bolsavik time at Nguoi Viet; the paper is so tame that sometime these little ads is more entertaint to read than the news itself. Now; Bolsavik is so alive and witty in his own blog, as a compliment. Bolsavik; I wonder was you reign in by the Bao Nguoi Viet publisher during your time in Nguoi Viet ?

A community still deeply divided , perhaps Nguoi Viet should run an ” editorial ” explaining the reason of not to publish the letter of respond from Ms Janet Nguyen ‘s camp and as an elected official , Ms Nguyen should show that she is a notch above , vindictiveness is not needed nor required to a good leadership.

I wasextremely disappointed at Nguoi Viet as well for posting that stupid 2 page ads. I am not sure who allowed that to happened at NV. That person should be reprimanded. Their leadership is down the drain with that ad. Janet’s reaction is a natural one, but the both should grow up and do the right thing for the community. At least Nguoi Viet can restore its creditability to the huge majority who voted for Janet, and Janet can rise to another level above.
