The Bolsavik saw this sign and couldn’t resist whipping out his cell phone to take pictures.
In the banner shown to the right, you don’t need to know any Vietnamese to recognize that this place is providing at least: Tailoring, water, DVD.
And we’re talking about a tiny store front, tucked away in the corner of a strip mall on Westminster Boulevard. It’s where former Westminster Councilman and first Vietnamese-American elected official Tony Lam used to have his restaurant, the same one where Ky Ngo staged his obscene protests back in the 1990′s.
Step inside the store, and you’ll see more.
On the left are high shelves stocked with DVD’s that you can either buy or rent. Mostly Chinese and Korean titles dubbed in Vietnamese. A couple of free-standing displays with more trinkets for sale.
Plus the counter where you drop off your dry cleaning, staffed by the tailor on duty, sitting at a sewing machine. She accepts adjustments as well as custom tailoring orders. She also sells phone cards, which is what most people use to call Vietnam. (Their calls are routed through a VOIP server and save a lot off their long-distance costs compared to direct dial.)
To the right is a row of faucets where you get your filtered water, topped by a stack of 5-gallon containers should you forget yours.
Another shelf of DVD’s. And racks of clothes for sale.
Wait. There’s more space on the wall. Then let’s hang some lacquerware art and sell those as well!!
In the annotated picture below, that empty space you see is the pretty much only empty space left in the entire store. Talk about efficient use of square footage! (Or cramped style — depending on your point of view…)

thats funny! the video store i go to is on the north west corner of westminster and euclid and they have tailoring, dry cleaning, phone cards and movies for rent or sale. whats cool is most rentals are 2 days and if you rent a new release and you bring it back late the dude only charges a dollar each day that your late. pretty good deal. they also repair damaged cd’s and dvd’s. funny but when the filthy communist ky ngo was in front of tony lams restaurant i stopped there to check out the display of pictures just like i did on moran st. and i asked ky ngo why he had a picture of george bush sr. on the display and i asked why he supported a murdering dope dealer like bush and that i was offended by that picture just like they were offended by truong van tran having a picture of ho chi minh on the wall. and that we can do that in america and right away he didnt want to talk to me. what is it with these communists that they’re out there causing problems disrupting business’s and they refuse to talk with somebody who doesnt agree with them? anyway, this is back when he was wearing that stupid plastic yellow hat. personally i think tony lam is a good man too bad most of the elected viet politicians arent.
It’s interesting!!! If you look at eBay website, every single link, every single word, no matter where you look or click, they end up making money … same thing here
There is another video store corner of Magnolia & Westminster sell very much the same things plus make up & TV repairs. I also saw a sign said she is selling Nem Nuong Ninh Hoa. I guess it is the survival skill. I guess after the Fall of Saigon, everyone turn entrepreneur in order to survice.
