The petition for a special election to recall San Jose City Council member Madison Nguyen (pictured left, from the 2008 Tet Festival) has been approved, and the special election will be held March 3 next year, reports the San Jose Mercury News here.
According to the paper, the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters found that at least 4,775 of the 5,180 signatures submitted (read here) were valid. Only 3,162 valid signatures are required.
With the verification step done, all that remains is to go through the formalities, and a special election will be held.
The parties recently sparred over whether the recall ballot should also include the election of a replacement. Doing so would favor a successful recall. Read more here.
However, it appears that the San Jose city charter does not allow that.
So, the ballot will most likely be a simple yes-or-no question on whether to recall Madison Nguyen, the first Vietnamese-American elected official in Northern California.
I would like to commend the LS group for their determination and intelligence in driving the recall campaign. If they were moral just a little, they would set an example of good citizenship for others. But only if they were moral…
It’s about time to say goodbye to itchBay!
DOWN WITH MADISON NGUYEN.WHO BETRAYED HER VOTERS. SHE ONLY SERVED FOR A GROUP OF BAD PEOPLE IN SAN JOSE ONLY . LET INVESTIGATED WHATEVER SHE DID . LET INVESTIGATED THE CITY OF SAN JOSE FUND. SHE GIVE AWAY FUNDS FOR SOMEONE SUPPORTED HER STAY ON HER SEAT.,ETC…..
It’s about time for San Jose city counsel Madison Nguyen to step down. Who is not deserved to served people of District 7. Because she abuse of authority and suspicious of cheating? etc….Use fund of the city to support someone to save her job?etc…..
The people supported for Madison Nguyen all are her fellowers, her co-workers … Including Mayor of San Jose, city counsels, pro-communist gangs, They know she was bad. But they have no choice because they don’t want the people bring them down after Madison. Protected her that mean protect them also.
LET VOTE YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, TO RECAL MADISON NGUYEN WHO IS A BAD CITY COUNSEL OF SAN JOSE. BECAUSE SHE JUST SERVED FOR A GROUP OF HER FRIENDS BUT NOT FOR THE PEOPLE OF DISTRICT 7
Yno,

I think Madison Nguyen is a good person. I am hoping she will prevail.
Yno,
Your whole San Jose city is going communist, you should pack up and go back to Vietnam.
Yno,
Doan Trang used to be anti-communist, until you call her a communist supporter.
You are paranoid, seeing ghosts of communism everywhere.
I feel sorry for Madison Nguyen, she didn’t know the art of politics: Making people happy.
She didn’t know that law makers left & right kissing the Vietnamese community.
She didn’t know that cities after cities recognized the yellow flag.
She didn’t know that her people like “Little Saigon”
Yes on 3/3/09 so that she would have ample time to learn about the things she didn’t know!
Being a politician or public official, there’s no way for one who could make everybody happy. Just look around and you will see it right away
MN decided not to please a small group of bad people. She already proved it she has been so right. See how those people have done to this community, to the city of San Jose
Vote NO to keep her there to do the right things
The following news may shed some light on the AMPLE cause for the recall:
http://www.metroactive.com/metro/02.25.09/news-0908.html
Silicon Valley’s Metro – Feb 25, 2009
…Son Nguyen is the father of Linda Nguyen, who, in 2005, lost to Madison Nguyen in a nasty council campaign. Son Nguyen is also a real estate developer with a Story Road shopping plaza named—coincidentally or not—-Little Saigon.
Son Nguyen, who did not reply to interview requests for this story, is the president of NOR-CAL Development Group, which built the Little Saigon Plaza in Sacramento. He would not confirm that he owns another shopping center on Story Road in San Jose, also called the Little Saigon Plaza. But according to property records, San Jose’s Little Saigon Plaza is owned by H&D Investments Inc., which has the same street address as Son Nguyen’s NOR-CAL Development Group.
According to the Recall Committee, Son Nguyen is not taking a lead role in the campaign. But he has taken a strong anti-Madison stand. Son Nguyen leases airtime on KVVN-AM, where he has reportedly used his Vietnamese-language talk show to run pro-recall material on the air for free…
Please note that I didn’t write “make everybody happy” I wrote “Making people happy”, It’s almost impossible to “make everybody happy” (although in a very small group you could)
You can think of “Making people happy” as “Making friends” don’t make enemies.
There are 5 main groups of people in this mess: White, Black, Latino, Chinese, Vietnamese. The other 4 groups didn’t care what name the Vietnamese choose to call their community, “Little Saigon” was the name chosen by most of the Vietnamese. If and only if Madison Nguyen agreed to that name then none of this Recall would happened, since the other 4 groups neutral on the matter then everyone else would come out happy, including Madison Nguyen (unless for some reasons she didn’t like that name.)
Well, the only matter left for the people to decide is to vote Yes or No on the Recall. You will never know if “a small group of bad people” suddenly becomes “a large group of good people” on Tuesday 3/3/09.
The Poll will be close in 3 hours in San Jose, any brave souls want to predict who will win, the Recall people or Madison Nguyen?
It’s hard to say who will win. The recall people consist of some thousand people but they are very determined and a large part of them happened to live in D7 of SJ. Besides, the recall leaders are very intelligent and devoted people. Their propaganda against Madison has been very effective. On the other hand, the general public do not like the recall people because of all the disruptions they created. However, many of them are not living in D7, and people in D7 have a very low turnout votes. My gut feeling is that the public will take this opportunity to come out to vote against the recall because they disgust the recall people, not because they support Madison. Thus, my prediction is that the recall will be defeated, not by Madison and her supporters, but by the general public.
Hi Tien,
You are brave, I give you that! In 2006 I favored the poor girl(Madison) over the rich girl(Linda). For now I’m kinda neutral, if you force me to pick then I have to pick Yes side to win. You may already knew that in the off-cycle election most people stayed home, only those who actively involved with the issue would vote. I’ll post the election result right after 8pm.
1 hour to go!
In the off-cycle/special elections most people stayed home (not voting)
For the records, I do not support Madison. As a former precinct leader, I respect the democratic process and accept the decision of an elected office which is the City Council of San Jose against my wish. However, I hate the LS people in San Jose because they behave like the communists and create negative images about our Vietnamese people.
NO 54.40% 5,299
YES 45.60% 4,441
Madison Nguyen did the right thing. It is a business district. We didn’t call it Little Italiy when the Italians that worked in the cannerys back in the day in downtown San Jose. Get over it. It is not Little Saigon, this is America.
NO 55.39% 6,502
YES 44.61% 5,237
Congratulations Madison Nguyen, you’ve won the special election!
Congratulations Tien Huynh, you’ve won the “prediction contest” fair and square!
Madison, congratulations on your triumphant victory! Consider yourself very lucky. You are saved by the general public this time because the LS people are so immoral. Should they be just a little moral, you would never have a chance. So, take this opportunity to learn. Never ever commit any immoral acts that the LS people have committed. Respectfully wishing you the best!
