A candidate forum, organized by OCAPICA and moderated by the Chair of Asian-American Studies at UC Irvine, is taking place today evening, putting together candidates for school boards and city councils of Garden Grove and Westminster.
The flyer (click on the picture to see full uncropped version) doesn’t list Garden Grove city council candidate Trung Nguyen as confirmed, but a person involved in the organization told the Bolsavik that both Trung and his nemesis Andrew Do will be there. If true (and that’s a big if), it should make this forum the first time both appear at the same public event as candidates.
Other Viet candidates scheduled to appear include Kim-Oanh Nguyen-Lam, the incumbent member of the Garden Grove School Board; Linh Ho, candidate for Garden Grove City Council; and Frank Tran, candidate for Westminster School Board.
Moderating the forum will be Dr. Linda T. Vo, a Board member of OCAPICA and professor and chair of Asian-American Studies at UC Irvine.
The forum will take place at the Board Room of the Bolsavik’s employer, the Rancho Santiago Community College District. The building, at the corner of Broadway and Santa Clara, can be seen from the I-5 freeway.
Here’s the when and where:
5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Rancho Santiago Community College District Board Room
2323 North Broadway Avenue
Santa Ana, CA 92706

“it should make this forum the first time both appear at the same public event as candidates.”
Thats not true bolsavik. Andrew and Trung were both in attendance atthe OCCCO candiate forum yesterday at the GG United Methodist Church. No fireworks occured between them. It was quite civil.
Paul Lucas
1/ Will the event start and finish on time?
2/ Will the event be translated into Vietnamese simultaneously?
3/ Will other “VIPs” be allowed to make remarks?
4/ If the answers are “Yes” to 2 and 3, then the answer to 1 is “No.”
@Quang: No to 2 and 3. This is an OCAPICA event, not your typical Viet event.
Bolsavik, then you know what I am talking about. I hope you write an entry about the importance of punctuality. A decade or so ago, I used to hear non-Vietnamese joke about “Vietnamese” time which meant an event would begin an hour after the listed starting time. Several weeks ago I attended a tribute dinner for Anne Frank who had retired from UCI’s Library System and who founded the Southeast Asian Archives. The event started an hour late, the emcee brought his children to entertain us and the sound system at Seafood World was horrible with loud feedbacks, Tony Lam reminded everyone again that he was the first Vietnamese elected in the U.S., Lou Correa’s rep read some lengthy canned proclamation, then Janet Nguyen told some stories. Then they all promptly left the event BEFORE the honoree even got a chance to speak. And this was two hours after the starting time on a Thursday evening. The event brought back memories of a panel in 2000 that I was asked to partake. Well, yours truly was the last speaker of five and we ran out of time.
Why can’t Viet event organizers start and end events on time? Why don’t organizers schedule the honorees to speak first? Why should representatives of public officials be given five minutes or more to read some bland proclamation if their bosses couldn’t show up? I have exchanged emails with other Vietnamese about this topic but everyone seems to accept the fact that Viet events drag on and on…
That’s one of the reasons why I don’t go to as many as I used to. But I will try to make it tonight.
Do and Nguyen were also both at the AARP candidates forum. Do left early, but both candidates were gracoius in attending. Unlike candidate Jones. However I will NEVER support a candidate who is just trying to follow the trannie/jannie trip to higher office. Did’nt work for Dina did it. Enough of this nonsense.
Janet and Andrew were both rude to leave early during the forum.
I understand Do is in deep trouble because he is not living in the city which he is running for an office.
Why do our viets are good in cheating? Casinos and now even in the public office elections?
I reaaly don’t understand why Andrew wants to run in Garden Grove when he doesn’t even live here. The rumors finger point Janet for this poor decision.
Thanks to Janet, people are calling Andrew Do a carpet bagger!
@Quang X. P.(?)
Most Americans who used to hang out with Vietnamese in Little Saigon have well adapted to the Viet “culture.” Not only wear “ao dai khan dong” and say “chuc mung nam moi,” they know how to used “rubber time” (come late, leave early) in the events that involve the Vietnamese. I call this phenomenon “Vi?t hóa.” Translated in English: “Vietnamization.” Hehehe…! For this lone reason, today the decent people are so scared the sh… out whenever they receive a Vietnamese wedding invitation card. Hehehe…!
Regarding the October7, 2008 post of Jung Kim, I have the following comments:
1) Andrew Do, together with his wife and family, currently live in a residence within the city limits of Garden Grove.
2) Andrew Do was raised and educated in the city of Garden Grove.
3) Vietnamese-American politicians are not always “cheating” rather their detractors in the community are always trying to tear them down and promote other people more to their liking.
4) Why would Bill Dalton, the Mayor of Garden Grove, take the political risk in endorsing Andrew Do for City Council if indeed Mr. Do is a so-called carpetbagger? This doesn’t make any sense.
I’m the only one in this world. Can please someone join me in this life? Or maybe death…
antikiday, this life is a gift and an opportunity to be loved by God. We are all made in His image are NEVER lefted alone.
