Viet Weekly question came up at OCAPICA candidate forum

The OCAPICA candidate forum, which brought together candidates running for the city councils and school boards of Garden Grove and Westminster, went off without any fireworks Monday night. One question, however, starkly revealed how the candidates thought of one significant development in the Viet community.

With the races pretty quiet except for perhaps the Trung Nguyen / Andrew Do competition, the absence of those two left the forum, well, sedate. Trung never confirmed, and Andrew confirmed but didn’t show. That would be Andrew’s empty seat in the photo above of the candidates for Garden Grove city council and mayor, with moderator Dr. Linda T. Vo at the podium.

There was, however, one moment of excitement when panelist Deepa Bharath, an OC Register reporter (seated in the middle of table at right) cited the protests against Viet Weekly magazine that ended after a whole year picketing on Garden Grove’s Historic Main Street, and asked the candidates about what she called “the protests that are the trend in the community.”

Oh great. The community finally set a trend, and it just has to be a trend of doing protests of the kind typified by the Viet Weekly one. The Committee to Oppose Resolution 36 (in Vietnamese: Lien Uy Ban Chong Nghi Quyet 36, named after a directive issued by the Communist Party of Vietnam) must be proud.

Unfortunately, the one candidate who actively organized, participated, and encouraged the Viet Weekly protests, wasn’t there. (That would be Trung Nguyen, if you don’t know.) So the audience got to hear only from people with some degree of separation from the picketers.

In response, mayoral candidate Karentracy Moreland Urda gave an answer saying something about freedom of speech. Not sure what her point was. Council candidate Tony Flores suggested that the “key word is tolerance” for a solution. Candidate Robin Marcario also suggested that people should “have dialogue and understand different viewpoints.”

Paul Lucas was the only one mentioning a Vietnamese name, citing the case of Father Nguyen Van Ly, a Catholic priest imprisoned by the government of Vietnam, as an example of how “the pain still comes back and haunts” the Viet community. In the early days of the Viet Weekly protests, Lucas could be seen hanging around with the protesters; he now says he was there to observe.

The one Viet candidate for Garden Grove City Council who showed up, Linh Ho, ran a circle around the question and somehow ended up praising some oral history project.

Mayor Bill Dalton offered something of an excuse for the protesters. He said, “Sometimes when you come from some place like communist Vietnam where you didn’t have the right to assemble, now that you have that right you tend to go overboard.”

Council candidate Charles “Mitch” Mitchell, however, didn’t mince words. He firmly asserted that it was “wrong to try to shut someone down.” He proudly proclaimed that he had taken place in the counter-protests, and said, “As a veteran who put my life on the line, I feel very strong about the principles that form the foundation of our system of government.” To him, Viet Weekly was right and the protesters were wrong.

Even sharper words, however, came from incumbent Councilman Steve Jones. After prefacing (like everyone else) with respect for both the rights of the press and the right to assemble, he added, “I suspect there are a lot of protests that were based on issues that are (slight hesitation, then:) augmented, for purposes of self-promotion.” Not sure which protest he meant, the one in Westminster or the one in Garden Grove.

Don’t worry, Hung Nguyen (front and center in picture above, by the Register). The Bolsavik is sure he didn’t mean you.

“In the early days of the Viet Weekly protests, Lucas could be seen hanging around with the protesters; he now says he was there to observe.”

    Bolsavik,
In the beginning of those protests on Main Street, I WAS there to observe. At the time, the whole protest thing on main Street was a novelty and new thing to me. After a while the novelty wore off. I did not participate in the protests save for stating my support for father Ly in Vietnam. At the time, I was not fully aware of what the protest was based on. Later on I learned it was about an opinion piece published in the paper several weeks before the protests were initiated.

Later on it became pretty obvious that the protests were a manifestation of the bickering between factions in the Vietnamese Community that pretty much didn’t have anything to do with the article but the article was used as an excuse to do such protests.

At least that was what I deduced from it all.

Unlike, some of the other Candidate Forums that I and the other candidates have attended- there were a few questions that I (and from the look on the other candidates faces – feel I’m not alone on this) did not fully understand. The Candidate Forum that we attended the day before had offered a little history to each question asked, so that we had a better chance of being on the same page of the same book. Many of our answers, I felt from the responses I was observing – indicated that we were not only not on the same page – we weren’t even reading the same book. From our answers – We told you that we thought you were asking us about your rights to freedom of speech and assembly – not about our opinions of whatever was behind the protest. My dad was union, but my older sister remembers when my dad started his own business as an electrical contractor – the union sent a picket line out to our home. Why? Because when there was barely enough work for my dad to do, the union felt he wasn’t hiring enough men out of the union hall to do 1 man’s work. Did they have a right to free speech? Yes. What was the result? Did it get more work for the union when Dad needed more help to handle the work load? It probably would have; however, it actually caused my dad to become a non-union contractor rather to seek help from a union hall when needed. Dad referred work out to other contractors that may not have been as good as he was, nor had been as reliably a trained in programs that I thought that only the union offered, as he was. I used to think the union was everything. Perhaps, the view that I used to hold of the unions in America are similar to what Communist hold of the Communist Party; but I don’t hold that view now. I am a union member now because it is required by my employer. Perhaps, there are those who see Communism as a necessary evil – like some union memberships. Perhaps, there are those that are Communist because they feel they are being treated fairly by the Communist Party, but I, personally, do not support the Communist Party.-KMU

If you have any questions feel free to call me or text me @ 714-583-3785 or email me @ MrsUrda@yahoo.com. If you email in Vietnamese or Spanish, I’ll take it to my friends and neighbors to translate. I want you to know this. I am praying for you and the City of Garden Grove. I will respond to your concerns. I don’t have all the answers – perhaps we can look for the answers together and come up with the solutions that will benefit our community the most.-KMU

  6. Karentracy Moreland Urda says:

One example of how far off the candidates may have been – We were asked about immigration. In the past, whenever immigration comes up – folks have wanted to know if a crack down on immigration laws is supported. Every time there is an enforcement of immigration laws or a change in them – I am asked for my birth certificate or passport, or asked if I have a green card. After the Candidates Forum, someone mentioned that the immigration status of those who had come form the Asian countries had their immigration status changed and that there are those that are being deported because of it. There is a big difference between refugees and illegal immigrants. How can we choose to rescue a people one moment, then declare them to be outlaws the next? Why? Because we chose to rescue them? That is not right.

I just got home from an amazing run in the gorgeouks sunshine outside on a chillaxious Friday and I was once again reminded of how beautiful and easy our lives are.

We spend so much time complaining and bickering about basically non-existent problems and sometimes we forget how awesome it is to be here. Sure, tragedies do exist (check out the drunk driving thread for some sad examples), but generally life is easy. If those young adults who were killed by drunk drivers were able to speak from the grave, the first thing they’d say is that life is short, so enjoy it. They really are proof of how short it can be.

Some personal examples of my life being beautifudl:

-Just spend a week in Canmore helping paint my friend’s million dollar home, while mountain biking, drinking, and getting free room and board. And I even got paid for it!

-Lost my wallet three times so far. Everytime it has been returned. One time I lost it in Edmonton with $70 cash inside, and when it was returned the cash was still in it! (minor miracle, especially in Edmonton!)

-Lost my passport in NZ while on a crazy adventurje. Got my new passport in the mail the day before my flight back to Canada!

-The economy is finally starting to turn around. So far this week I’ve saved about $200 in travel expenses thanks to the rising Canadian dollar!

-Going to Spain in September for $116 thanks to cmyden and his amazinwg travel deal!

-And we can all agree that the Flames getting Bouwmeester for nothing is something we as a group can celebrate! p9u8e3

With Cialis giving them a lustful unruffled, not upsetting them one consequence in an unrestricted term stretching one and a half day, they can douse the give someone notice of passions raging in the get offence at and society of the fairer sex.
