What’s Quang X. Pham running for?

While locals are still watching the trickling in of votes for things like city council races, former Navy aviator and author Quang X. Pham (pictured) went out attending the Leadership Academy for Asian Pacific American Elected Officials — even though he’s not an elected official.
Which raises, of course, the question: What kind of elected office is he shooting for?
As reported by AsianWeek here, “Three Republicans, two Democrats and one independent met with prominent APA elected officials, leaders of Congress, APA community leaders and political operatives whose expertise included speech-making, fundraising and Internet strategies.” 
The event is run by the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies.
The “one independent” would be Quang X. Pham. The ninth annual APAICS seminar also featured workshops on key issues such as immigration, voting, the 2010 Census and the current mortgage crisis.
Quang X. Pham is celebrated in the Vietnamese community as a particularly articulate bilingual speaker who proudly wears on his sleeve both his military service in the U.S. and his heritage as the son of a South Vietnamese military officer. Both elements figured prominently in Pham’s book A Sense of Duty: My Father, My American Journey.
With his military background, Quang X. Pham was asked to introduce Presidential candidate John McCain when the latter held a campaign rally in Little Saigon, in 2000. The “C” in APAICS stands for “Congressional,” and it has been generally considered a good place to prepare an APA candidate for a House of Representatives race. Prominent among other attendees at this year’s seminar is Assemblyman Ted Lieu, the former military prosecutor and Democrat representing the Torrance-Venice coastal area. Lieu is widely believed to have his eyes set on inheriting Congresswoman Jane Harman’s seat should she move on and up. Harman, the chairwoman of the House Intelligence subcommittee, has recently been mentioned as a potential Obama pick for National Intelligence Director.
So, would that be a natural conclusion to say that Pham is aiming at U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez’s seat?

I heard Van Tran wants to run for the Sanchez seat as well. I would vote for Pham over Tran.
As a Republican, I like Pham and would support his candidacy. I think our community needs a fresh new face. He has a great story that is very electable and will allow him to cross ethnic lines. He’s articulate, presentable, a veteran, family man, and a self made businessman. That says a lot because too many of our current Vietnamese politicians depend on their political positions for income. And the current politics in Little Saigon is just too dirty.

I’d like Pham to run for Supervisor against Janret Nguyen, which is a non-partisan seat. He’ll take Janet apart. She is a very weak candidate. Pham can’t beat Tran. Nobody can beat Tran in the Viet community. Tran will get all the GOP endorsement and the money needed to make the run. Pham is beter suited for non-partisan races since he’s not too political and he does not have to run for the Primary. He can take out Janet Nguyen easy.

Yeah right. I read it. They all ended back in the States after having fun for a couple years in VN. Even with all the so-called opprtunities and fun in Saigon, Tiffany Nguyen, the girl featured in the article, decided to come back to California because she misses her boy friend and how to drive again. Those were tyhe reasons given, which I find bizarre.
I just hope that these “young” Viet Kieus don’t pick up the many bad habits of lying, greed, selfishness, and a get-ahead-at any-cost-I survine-first mentality of some of those people who toiled under communism for over 30 years, and bring these bad traits back Stateside.

You guys obviously haven’t been reading Pham’s writings. Most of his writing is on national and international issues. Pham wants little to do with local, county politics. He is best suited for a platform that has some national/global influence. With the way things went during the last elections and all the dirty negative politics in our community, I’m not sure if Van Tran has a lock on the Republican Party support. Pham has much more of a compelling story that can help him beat Sanchez. And he’s got the finances and connections to make it a competitive race, even in a Republican primary.

I agree with you that Van Tran, nor does anybody has a lock on anything. But I don’t think he needs to lock anythying, though. I am not even sure if Van Tran even wanted to run in the 47th. It’s not a very good seat and it will be redrawn in 2010 anyway. The seat can only get worse in terms of registration.
You seem to complain about dirty politics in the community, but I think it’s very normal and is actually much cleaner than most mainstream political races.
There seems to be a double standard you and many Vietnamese bloggers apply here. Blame and attribute everything negative on the Viet electeds but completely ignore or give everyone else a pass. You don’t have to go very far to see real dirty politics and find things that you don’t like. Just turn on the computer and read the daily news.
That’s the problem. People in this community like to eat their own. It’s very destructive and negative, and dumb, too. Familiarity and comfort, I guess. It’s too bad because those non-Viet politicians are just taking advantage of us for a vote and a buck.

If whoever said Quang didn’t do anything for “our community,” perhaps he expected him to do the same kind of “political business” that the other Vietnamese politicians in O.C. had done. And for his book, it had a good impact on larger American readers rather than Vietnamese in Little Saigon.
What Quang needs to do now is to build a grass-root movement or support base of young and old Vietnamese Americans, which would work in tandem with his American friends’ support for his election campaign. And he has to do it now, don’t wait until he announces to run. To start with, he already had the young Vietnamese fans who read his book and the old comrades of his father’s VNAF Squadron and VNAF connection. Doing this P.R. later would make people feel that they are being used for his personal ambition, not for any common cause or even just friendship.

I agree with you on your first point. Pham flew dangerous helicopter missions in service to the U.S. during several wars. I think that says a great deal about his contribution to society. These other bloggers are at times immature and narrow-minded. They need to do their homework.
With the wars and current economic situation in the U.S., you need someone with military and international experience, as well as a proven businessman who has started up and managed companies and created jobs. And he’s not a career politician. I think he’s well prepared for Congress. Certainly better prepared than other potential Viet-American candidates.

Eventhough his English is excellent (I mean the best in our community) but in Vietnamese community people don’t know him. In American community they don’t know him. He wrote about 2 books but I wonder anyone read those books.

Here’s the paradox. If he speaks English well and can’t articulate in Vietnamese, Quang would get little Viet support since Viet voters would not understand him and look down on him for his lack of knowledge and apprecaition for his ancestry.

As an independent, Quang is a potential cross over candidate. If Loretta Sanchez decides not to run for re-election in 2010, the Democratic Party may want to pick him up - his military and business credentials would be exactly what the party would want, particularly to pick up Republican votes in OC. Since he’s more right leaning, he could end up being a centrist Democrat. The Republican Party better watch out for that move.

PXQ is perfect in expressing the Vietnamese feeling in American way that had really won the heart and mind of American readers. Check out on this line in his book:
“…My father kicked the overloaded scooter into gear with all six of us aboard, and we started weaving toward the dirty alley. I looked back at our house and wondered if I would ever see it again. The sandbags above our homemade bomb shelter seemed to be sliding off the roof; the shadow of the trees in the front yard shifted with the wind; the fragrance from our green mango tree floated in the air. Set aside his plan to run for political office, the guy had done more in lightening up American public opinion on the good cause of Vietnam war that most US biased media never mentioned the role of South Vietnamese soldiers. On Vietnamese language skill, he spoke Vietnamese much much better, far beyond…Janet couldn’t catch up. Kekeke,,!

Viet people look down on Janet Nguyen when she speaks Vietnamese like she speaks Chinese, both of which nobody understands. She was able to win re-election partly because she kept her mouth shut and let Andrew Do Do Bird and Nick the Commie Friendly Le Cong speak on the radio for her. At one time, I thought it was Nick Le Cong, who goes around claiming his lawyer title (oh really?)who was running for Supervisor, not Janet. She was a ghost candidate. Viet people are beginning to know now. They don’t respect her very much.

I have already answer your question before. Ms. Janet saw bad leadership from LS Van, like shady character and lack of integrity. This is the reason she must break free from LS Van and become a better leader. Some time when you want to serve community and the leader is not very good, you must be courage and be a hero and break free from the leader. Now, Ms. Janet is a better leader with many more followers. Ms. Janet team has won over LS Van team many times now. I believe she is the best Viet leader to become first Viet Congress person. She has many Viet supporters and can get non-Viet support.
