The year-end edition, here, of Chuck Shepherd‘s long-running syndicated column “News of the Weird” includes this item about a Vietnamese-American who makes his own (but not the only) contribution to shattering the myth that Asians are good at math:
Muoi Van Nguyen, 31, was arrested in Spokane Valley, Wash., in November, charged with breaking a window with a hammer at a state liquor store and grabbing a bottle of wine valued at $9. Earlier, Van Nguyen had tried unsuccessfully to break the window with a rock, but decided he needed a hammer to do the job and went to a nearby store, where he purchased one for $11.
Shepherd’s use of the last name “Van Nguyen” proves that he, like a vast majority of U.S. denizens, has never met a Vietnamese person.

Some states do not allow sales of alcoholic beverages on Sundays, so it may not have been an issue of money for alcoholics like Mr. Nguyen. I had a six-pack “confiscated” by a supermarket checkout clerk once in Kansas.
Hoa Viet’s story is a good lesson of “No Rush To Conclusion.”
Hammer was not a bad investment…….$11 hammer can break more than one windows (allowing him to steal more liquors in the future ie. on Sundays)and also may be used in his garage for other home repair purposes.
But why steal?
Alcohol, drugs, money, woman, and power…… these are popular evil agents contaminating our men today.
What an idiot! He really doesn’t know how to get returns on his investments. I gave up 1/2 million for a chance to be in jail. Now, that’s an investment!
Jung Kim,
Alcohol, drugs, money, woman, and power have ALWAYS contaminated men.
lol, or are you one of those people that blame everything on liberalism and modern times?
Steve, I blame weak human spirit coupled with selfish desire feeding on one’s flesh.
If one is solely seeking for his/her “liberalism” without consideration for the others…yes, that person is useless.
JK,
You are a great example of a hard working American. You set your sight on something and achieve it. Great job!! Keep going!!
