Voters in Louisiana just elected the very first Vietnamese-American Congressman ever, sending Anh Joseph Cao (pictured) to Capitol Hill and rejected the re-election bid of William Jefferson, under indictment for corruption, reports the AP here.
With 79 percent of precincts reporting, Cao had 52.9 percent of the vote to Jefferson’s 43.2 percent, says CNN here.
Cao, registered Republican, is an immigration lawyer and community activist who once pursued the priesthood with the Jesuits.
Hailing from New Orleans’s Versailles — the area of almost 100% Vietnamese , best known to outsiders as an area heavily damaged by Katrina — Cao is said to be affiliated with Boat People S.O.S., a refugee rights advocacy group based in Washington DC.
Jefferson, the incumbent, is Louisiana’s first black Congress member since Reconstruction. He has been indicted for corruption. Among other evidence, Jefferson was videotaped by the FBI receiving $100,000 worth of $100 bills in a leather briefcase at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Arlington, Virginia.
Cao, a political newcomer, won in the district that’s 62% African-American and only 11% Republican.

Even three years after her arrest and conviction, Cyndi Nguyen’s services “at the paralegal office were advertised in the Chinese Consumer Yellow Pages website. She was listed as “Xinh Cyndi Nguyen, Attorney at Law,” although she is not a lawyer.”
Van Tran said he did not know how she came to be listed as an attorney. “They can put anything on the Internet,” he said.
“The operators of the online directory, however, said that the person listed would have provided the title. It is a misdemeanor to purposely misrepresent oneself as an attorney.”
