Joseph Cao sworn in

The Vietnamese-American man who came from almost total obscurity, even with other Viets, to beat a longtime incumbent was sworn in yesterday with his daughters by his side on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Ánh Joseph Cao took office as the representative from Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District less than two months after winning a special runoff election and ousting 9-term Congressman William Jefferson, who’s under indictment on sixteen charges related to corruption.
That’s Cao in the AP photos with daughters Sophia, 5 (golden dress), and Betsy, 4 (red).
Three days after Cao’s historic December 6, 2008 victory, his hometown newspaper the New Orleans Times-Picayune remarked on how utterly obscure a background the former Jesuit seminarian had come from.
Under the hed “Vietnamese are caught off guard by Cao win” here, the paper’s David Hammer wrote:
As surprised as the political establishment in New Orleans is about Republican Anh “Joseph” Cao’s victory over nine-term Democratic incumbent Rep. William Jefferson, Vietnamese-American communities across the country may be even more shocked that Cao is the first of their ethnic group elected to Congress.

The Vietnamese political commentary Web site Bolsavik.com didn’t seem to notice Cao until Nov. 24, when the lead blogger noted the GOP’s investment in the race and wrote: “The first Viet congressman may not hail from Bolsavikland (a blog reference to the Orange County area) after all.”
The site received an outpouring of emotional comments when it reported news of Cao’s victory Saturday night.
(No surprise the Bolsavik chose to excerpt this part, eh?)
What difference a few weeks make.
The day before Cao’s swearing in, the same paper featured the hed: “Anh ‘Joseph’ Cao’s star is already is rising in Washington D.C.” - here.
It noted:
Even before his swearing-in, Cao is the surprising star of the new Congress.

On Dec. 30, Cao was the subject of a grand and glowing profile in The Washington Post style section, headlined “The Possible Dream: Louisiana’s Historic New Congressman Seems to Surprise Everybody But Himself, ” the likes of which most members of Congress can only dream of.

Let me give you some inside scoop/poop First, Janet told me she has not received official confirmation from the communist party regarding her membership status . Hence she is not a communist yet.
Second, Janet is still considering to run for the governor seat in 2010 if mexican Art continues to bother her with her small county seat.
Privately she has interest in becoming the vice president republican nominee in 2012 if she can locate her hospital documents from the Catalina Island.

The writing is based on the records, results, analysis of the past elections. Many things are likely or unlikely but everything is possible.
1- on the federal lavel:
Cao Quang Anh has won the district not based on vietnamese american votes. Hopefully he could retain the seat, but is is very difficult and unlikely since the Democratic Party cannot give this seat to the Republican Party the next time and the vietnamese americans have only about 1.5% of the total votes in that district.
Loretta Sanchez is too powerful for any opponent.
2- on the state level:
Tran Thai Van cannot be voted to the 4th term (term limit: 3 terms) in the 68th district of assembly of the state of california.
Hubert Vo can be re-elected, he has very good chance sine his base is not composed of vietnamese american vote (1%) and many voted against him in Houston.
3- on the lower levels:
- County (Orange)
Janet Nguyen term lasts until next election in 2012
- City
(Westminster)
Andy Quach until 2010
Ta Duc Tri until 2010
Diep Mien Truong until 2012

Janet Nguyen is a joke. She’s AWOL after her election. Very typical of her. Loretta Sanchez hasn’t done much in her 12 years in the House, either. Can anybody name a single significant bill that Sanchez was/is able to have signed into law?
Both Janet Nguyen and Loretta Sanchez are only interested after themselves. At least Loretta is more pleasant to look at and has a better personality. Janet’s not going anywhere. She’s already lucky to have her seat now.

If I were Art Pedroza, then Van Tran should be considered as my “BEST” opponent, or even a neutral ally. Being polite to him would be the best strategy and keep my distance. Engaging this bash and uncivil exchange of insults is just contrary to ART’s goal.
First, Mr. VAN TRAN, as implied here is a candidate with a checker past, thus has limited appeal in Santa Ana Viet community only. He has reached his highest attainable position. It would be wise for ART to keep him there.
Second, Mr. VAN TRAN is now LOCKED in a urban guerilla war with JANET NGUYEN. the Santa Ana Viets are so embroiled in so many suicidal civil wars, it is “mutually assured destruction”.
It is in the gene of the Vietnamese people. It’s self hatred, it’s self destruction.
