OC Register, on FOB II’s shutdown

The OC Register added to the mix its thoughts about the shut down of FOB II: Art Speaks in a column by Richard Chang on the paper’s Arts Blog, here.

Excerpts:

The protesters, mainly older Vietnamese residents of Orange County and Southern California, chanted slogans and denounced the curators and organizers of the exhibit at a news conference today. They said the image was pro-communist and threatened a larger protest over the weekend. “F.O.B. II” was due to close on Sunday.

The protesters brought pictures of a girl in a bikini with the yellow star on her butt and a Ho Chi Minh bust in the toilet. They called that “real art.”

….

While I’ve written some stories about Vietnamese protests in the past, I don’t know the whole history behind the protesters and their concerns. Yet, it seems like they have a lot of power if they can shut down an art exhibit that featured a lot of different kinds of work, much of it non-political, plus get two editors at a local paper fired.

I thought the United States was a place where freedom of speech and expression are protected by the Constitution. But apparently, those rights are not fully protected or respected in certain communities here.

The Bolsavik is curious: Whoever made that “real art” – where the heck did he get the bust of Ho Chi Minh and the red flag bikini bottom?

  1. Lanin says:

oh, STFU… The Constitution protects not only you liberals… The key point here is any art exhibitor go to prison?

  2. chau nguyen says:

These elderly protesters have a severe case of allergic reaction to anything red, much like those bulls in one of those Spanish bull-fighting arena.

  3. Jung Kim says:

Bolsavik, United States is what? yeah, the dream land…without sorrow and imperfection.
You are expecting little too much!

The Bastard Brian Doan was lucky to live here…when a son throws big dagger to his own father’s heart, not too many nations/people would let the bastard son go unpunished.

  4. Jung Kim says:

The organizers should never had allowed Brian Doan to display arrogant/damaging communist propaganda pictures in this exhibit…..they ended up paying the ugly price.

  5. Jung Kim says:

Intentional/provoking gamble resulted in a net loss

  6. Tien Huynh says:

The Viet refugees have shown the world how hypocritical they are, and that as victims of oppressions, they are still capable of oppressing their own kinds in the name of freedom from oppression! It’s pity for them that they are unable to comprehend why the American public no longer has any sympathy for them like they had 30 years ago…

  7. Adieu says:

    Bolsavik,
Why didn’t you tell people that you’re the husband of Le Dinh Y Sa, the CEO (or president?) of VAALA? If so, maybe people can understand why you’ve tried to defend her organization so far. By the way, please send my regards to Y Sa. And tell her that I was someone to know her from the days she still worked at the radio station VNCR with her father, Mr. Le Dinh Dieu. (I especially admired her dad.) And that time, she’s not married yet. C’ on, Bolsavik! You’re so lucky with a beautiful wife like her!

  8. Jung Kim says:

This is shocking news….. we don’t believe it.

  9. Fraud Alert says:

    Mr Bolsavik,

You are an unscrupulous man. The first person to blog to this article was Country First, yet I don’t see that blog. The last I saw had 17 postings, and now substantially lower.

As a concerned Viet, I know to stay on top of your terrible blogosphere to see what other tricks you plan to play on the community. I have my eyes on your website!

  10. Jung Kim says:

No, I think it was communist cyber crew’s dirty work. there was a lock down by the commie agents all day today.

  11. Fraud Alert says:

JK, speaking on behalf of Mr. Bolsavik now? Who’s next? President Obama?

  12. Jung Kim says:

I can not believe he is related to naive/spoiled exhibit organizers.

  13. Fraud Alert says:

Hahaha, good one! JK, do you know what the status is on Mr. Ky Ngo? I did not see all the flags around and saw the thing taken down and destroyed.

  14. Jung Kim says:

Le Dinh Sa needs to kneel down and ask for forgiveness…. many people are upset with her .

  15. Jung Kim says:

One of my friend was telling me today that she needs to shave her head.

  16. Freddie Ngo says:

I found another hottie in red, the one in the two piece bathing suit with the red bottom and yellow star. I think I am in love.

  17. Jung Kim says:

…then kneel down in the public.

  18. Freddie Ngo says:

bow the public and ask for forgiveness?

  19. Jung Kim says:

Hey Freddy go play with your froggy!

  20. Jung Kim says:

Freddy you will be in love with Froggy’s tasty legs.

  21. Freddie Ngo says:

Froggy? What are you talking about?

  22. Jung Kim says:

Freddy you can pay for the Le Dinh Sa’s hair cut….. I mean shaving.

  23. Freddie Ngo says:

That’s terrible! She’s only a small cog in the giant machine, trying to generate revenue to pay for the staff, rent, and taxes. Cut these people a break but not the commie.

  24. Jung Kim says:

People are complaining either Sa’s low intelligence or her boldness without respect…… prompted this wrong decision of inviting unjustified provocation against our community.

  25. Jung Kim says:

Freddy I know you have that brand new lawn mower in the garage.

  26. Freddie Ngo says:

Has anyone asked her to speak publicly to answer all these questions? I am sure there must be justifiable reasons for the decision. Can we give her an opportunity to explain herself?

  27. Jung Kim says:

As far as I know Le Dinh Sa is still single..and with shaved head, who is going to marry her?

  28. Freddie Ngo says:

Let’s not get personal. There are men with that fetish.

  29. Jung Kim says:

Before the hair cut or the after? answering questions….

  30. Freddie Ngo says:

After. She maybe the next runway model with the new look.

  31. Jung Kim says:

Freddy you are funny.. fetish! I did hear shaved woman attracts baldy guys in the past.

  32. Jung Kim says:

Freddy it’s not a runway model….. it’s a running way model from your angry lawn mower!

  33. Freddie Ngo says:

How did you guess? We all can’t be perfect like you. Anyway, have a good evening and we will resume in the future.

  34. Jung Kim says:

    Good night!

  35. Jung Kim says:

We need to send a letter/make calls to Long Beach City College and have harmful communist activist Brian Doan removed from college’s payroll.

  36. Jung Kim says:

A dumb irresponsible lefty professor from UCR Lan Duong needs to be fired and sent to vietnam next week.

  37. Adieu says:

    Hi Bolsavik and everyone,
For more information to make you believe that I know about Y Sa’s family more, I just share this:
From the very first days of the beginning of VNCR, at that time, they still were on Acacia Pkwy, near Main St in Garden Grove (not on Moran St, Westminster as currently), they started with four main people on air every day, that were Mr. Le Dinh Dieu, Hoang Trong Thuy, Le Dinh Y Sa, and Hong Nga. Besides, there were Phan My Suong who’s an accountant and some other supporting people as Nguyen Truong, Ngoc Chieu,…
Today, Mr. Le Dinh Dieu (the person I have always respected and admired) does not exist anymore. He’s gone but not forgotten. (Sometimes, I wonder what will he think about his daughter now if he’s still here.) Hoang Trong Thuy’s still with VNCR. Hong Nga, Phan My Suong, and Nguyen Truong went to VOCR broadcasts on every Sunday.
Mr. Le Dinh Dieu has one son and one daughter.
The son is Le Dinh Nhat Lang currently works for Nguoi Viet. His wife is Truc Linh (not the singer Truc Linh) worked for VNCR short time before quitting to work part-time for Nguoi Viet and Bank of America.
The daughter, Le Dinh Y Sa (the lady with the charming voice can easily take away your heart), came to USA from France, and graduated from USC. Besides working at VAALA and sometimes contributing on VNCR as “Vong Chan Troi Nghe Thuat” and “Chung Ta Di Mang Theo Que Huong”, her main career is Pharmacist.
To be honest, at the old days, I only knew the above people…; never heard anything about you, Vu Quy Hao Nhien, aka The Bolsavik. Then, suddenly, Y Sa got married with you, the lucky guy!
The Chinese/Viet New Year is coming, I wish both of you the best!
(Of course, best wishes to everyone’s reading this website too!)

  38. Country First says:

    Revised and Reposted :

** It is a huge loss for VAALA to let one artwork dominate and (then) destroy the whole art exhibit, which many aspiring artists have worked so hard to contribute. Forcing your particular view point upon the community is sure way to damage your own call for dialogue.

** It is a huge loss for those opposing the exhibit, the main stream media once again describe this group as oppressor of individual freedom of expression.

** It is a huge loss for Vietnamese community. The only means of resolution within the Vietnamese community is street justice ( both sides are using ).

** VAALA as the instigator of this conflict bears more responsibility for this publicity disaster, thus should initiate some measure of reconciliation.

** The opposition group must demonstrate the ability to transcend above parochial pettiness and to seek wider consensus.

  39. Jung Kim says:

VAALA has been red marked and pro communist viet college teachers are exposed under sun light…. in a negative way.

The Bastard Brian Doan and Dumb Lan Duong must repent now….. unless they want to greet bus load of anti communist protesters at their college campus.

  40. Country First says:

The twisted definition of “divide-and-conquer” strategy within the Vietnamese community.

    * We divides ourselves first, and our enemy just come in and conquer later.

    * Older generations have been so successfully dividing, now VAALA is starting its own quest of division.

When are we going to stop this spiraling into the abyss ?

  41. Jung Kim says:

I hope this unpleasant experience can be a good measuring stick for the VAALA’s future dirction/plan implementations.

  42. Jung Kim says:

Our community is lacking sense of respect and gratitude for the community’s interest ….in both past and future perspective.

  43. Country First says:

    Mr. Adieu,

In the interest of full disclosure, your clarification of Mr. Hao-Nhien Q. Vu’s relations to the organizers is critical. I appreciate your kind and sincere words. I wish to yield to your advice and guidance any time in the future.

  44. Adieu says:

    Country First,
Thank you very much for your good comments. I wish you the best.
To make it clear, I’ve had nothing personal against the Bolsavik (Mr. Vu Quy Hao Nhien) and his wife (Mrs. Le Dinh Y Sa.)
What I said above was the truth that many people in Little Saigon area already knew; especially the people have worked for the Viet News as Nguoi Viet, Viet Bao, Vien Dong, Viet Weekly, VNCR, Little Saigon Radio,…; of course including the people from VAALA. Currently, the website take2tango.com, when reported about the FOB II event, also mentioned the relationship between Mr. Hao Nhien and Mrs. Y Sa.
    Best wishes to everybody!

  45. Adieu says:

    To Everyone,

I would like to make a correction for my second post at 9:17 am today. Mrs. Y Sa was not the one to contribute to “Chung Ta Di Mang Theo Que Huong” on VNCR. In fact, Mrs. Hong Nga was.

Mrs. Y Sa has only been in charge for the program “Vong Chan Troi Van Hoc Nghe Thuat” which was the original idea from her father, Mr. Le Dinh Dieu. Sometimes, that program has been assisted by Mr. Hoang Trong Thuy. There still are some articles about that program with Mrs. Y Sa’s name on the website radiovncr.com currently, if you want to take a look at.

Since the day Mrs. Hong Nga left for working at VOCR with Mr. Pham Phu Minh and Mrs. Phan My Suong (two old friends of her from the ” original”VNCR), I am not sure if the program “Chung Ta Di…” still exists or not.

I sincerely apologize for my mistake.

  46. Country First says:

William Faulkner on the role of artists (Dec 10, 1960):

It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The artist’s voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.

Vietnamese artists : we need you to be the healer of sufferings, and instead of the perpetrator of pains.

  47. Jung Kim says:

We don’t expect viet artists to be healers nor political activsts…… just be a normal artists drawing fine arts. Is this too much to ask for?

  48. Country First says:

John F. Kennedy on the role of artists (oct 26, 1963) :

When power leads men towards arrogance, art reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man’s concern, art reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, art cleanses. For art establishes the basic human truth which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment.

If sometimes our great artists have been the most critical of our society, it is because their sensitivity and their concern for justice, which must motivate any true artist, makes him aware that our People falls short of its highest potential. I see little of more importance to the future of our country and our civilization than full recognition of the place of the artist.

  49. Jung Kim says:

In order to have any impact through art work……artist must make a connection with intended viewers.
