The OC Register added to the mix its thoughts about the shut down of FOB II: Art Speaks in a column by Richard Chang on the paper’s Arts Blog, here.
Excerpts:
The protesters, mainly older Vietnamese residents of Orange County and Southern California, chanted slogans and denounced the curators and organizers of the exhibit at a news conference today. They said the image was pro-communist and threatened a larger protest over the weekend. “F.O.B. II” was due to close on Sunday.
The protesters brought pictures of a girl in a bikini with the yellow star on her butt and a Ho Chi Minh bust in the toilet. They called that “real art.”
….
While I’ve written some stories about Vietnamese protests in the past, I don’t know the whole history behind the protesters and their concerns. Yet, it seems like they have a lot of power if they can shut down an art exhibit that featured a lot of different kinds of work, much of it non-political, plus get two editors at a local paper fired.
I thought the United States was a place where freedom of speech and expression are protected by the Constitution. But apparently, those rights are not fully protected or respected in certain communities here.
The Bolsavik is curious: Whoever made that “real art” – where the heck did he get the bust of Ho Chi Minh and the red flag bikini bottom?
You are what i thought you really are Kiet, a snapping dog like your cousin Jose….that s all.
You re good at avoiding direct question, like Jose….And starting to resort to name calling, like Jose…Boy oh boy..
You comment on an art piece? And i ask you if you have any better idea to change the situation?…No?…And then you start to provoke me?…How many single cells you have in your brain?…
Kiet, I am giving the options to the readers. I do admit I dislike anti family value, selfish individual’s twisted thinking process …because it often destroys our core basic foundations.
Everyone has(had) only ONE dad and the title “bastard” does not have good appeal to anyone for right reason.
I do admire Brian Doan s work and his pioneering view….
All i recommend is to shoot to photo a little differrent if i were him to fit the audience……and why is that so hard to see my point?..
Currently Brian Doan holds that “Bastard” tittle.
If weirdoes like you did not destroy B. Doan’s work, we would be having an intelligent conversation, but some RAT BASTARD SOB defaced it. So now, I can only rely on what others have commented.
Have you seen it in person or repeating what others have said like a parrot?
He can repent and become true artist ……delivering positiveness for the community.
Why are you just assuming we wanna destroy somebody s art work?..It s a lot of work to shoot a meaningful piece to express your view to a wide public, and you, Kiet Dylan, are so full of craps….keep avoiding my request to ask for your opinion..
And believe me, not all Viets like that fool Ly Tong and his buddy Ngo Ky…alright.?..
Sonny, my opinion is I enjoyed it after “Eye of the Storm” explained what to look for. Perhaps he should have written some instructions on how to read his work, so people don’t misread it too much.
Even though I like the work, I keep my opinion to myself and not go to the community and start a protest. Furthermore, I don’t go around telling artists what to do like you do. Do I come to your household and suggest ways to “improve” your living condition? Then keep your suggestion to yourself. You and Jung Kim have much to learn about yourself.
There you go…..a clean no cussing conversation.
The reason for the supposed recommendation is to deal with the already-happening-situation right now, protests and strikes and finger pointing….It s too late to reverse the situation….
That s why i said if i were in his shoes?..I d have shot the photo a little different to fit this intended Viet Community, that s it?…If they had this show up in Idaho or Wyoming or Montana?…Guess what?..Nobody cares?..
Sonny, that’s the entire point of artwork, to provoke thoughts and ideas. Does every art exhibit have to been sanitized for the Viet community? That thought in itself is revolting and sick; it implies Viets in Li’l Saigon are too stupid to understand art which is untrue and they have no control of themselves, which is also untrue. Do we change the presentation of the art work for the Viet community or our thinking?
Ok, you want it! Screw you and Jung Kim.
Kiet, If you like to deal with “mute” people then you are in the wrong place. This blog shares/ exchange ideas views rather freely…. on both hot and cold topics.
You want to become a pricacy advocate? Then go watch CNN and keep all the latest scoop to yourself. Go entertain yourself got it?
Kien ,and now you speak like a deseperate cholo wannabe …. if you want to srew something/someone, do you have a srewdriver ? If not…then go poke yourself with a dirty chopstick you idiot!
JK, Sonny wanted something dirty, so I delivered; I don’t know if it was relevant to the conversation. Where do you get the idea that I prefer mute conversations? Tell me where did I state that?
kiet dylan, well said …..AMEN!
10:59 am post “keep opinions to myself”
10:14 am post “keep views to yourself”
I walked myself into the ghetto heaven…AMEN.
I meant it in reference to your constant recommendation on how B. Doan should present his work, not that I don’t want to hear your wondeful opinion.
