Jiffy Lube-quick summary: A second protest against Cypress College has been called for tomorrow Wednesday.
Slightly longer version:
On Monday last week, Lac Tan Nuygen‘s group came to see the college president to hand in his organization’s protest letter. The president was out of town.
But Nuygen did get an appointment to speak to the Dean of the School of Arts, the Department Head of Photography, the Director of the gallery holding the exhibit, and Brian Doan.
So, on Tuesday, they met for a couple of hours. There’s an audio here posted by Do Thuan, one of the participants (the Bolsavik hasn’t been able to listen to it because he’s missing a plugin), and a report on Nguoi Viet here (in Vietnamese). The bottom line can be summarized by something Nuygen said, is: “We’re not interested in your arguments about freedom of expression because we’ve heard them several times already, we just want you to take down the photo.”
Coming back that Tuesday evening, Nuygen sent out an email expressing his disappointment and scheduling a Wednesday meeting to plan for a Thursday protest at Cypress. There weren’t a lot of takers, but that did not deter Do Thuan and some of her friends. They made a sign (wrapped in plastic to protect against the frequent rain that Southern California has been having) that says, “Don’t abuse your freedom of expression! Don’t use Art TO HURT!”
They then posed with that sign next to the controversial photo of the girl in the red-and-yellow-star shirt. For good measure, they also posed with one of Brian Doan’s nude photos, asking him not to use naked bodies to hurt either.
Although small in number, the protestors more than made up for it in persistency. They were at the college once in the morning, then coming back again in the afternoon, only leaving when it started getting dark.
Another meeting was held by Nuygen for yesterday, to plan for another protest tomorrow – which will be something of a last chance to express their feelings because the exhibition is scheduled to end on Saturday.
The OC Register’s Marla Jo Fisher talked to college officials and wrote up a story here.
Do Thuan posted pictures of last week’s protest here and here.
Nuygen has been talking about bringing Viet elected officials along to his protests and meetings. So far, there’s been no takers on that front either.
.
Three lonely stooges!
What was that?
Nude photo => Hard erection => Pain!
Now I can see why Art can Hurt.
Please do not abuse your freedom of expression,
Please do not use ART or PROTEST to hurt each other
We are hurting only each other.
No other ethnic community are so cannibal as Vietnamese.
We have been so conditioned to hurtl each other.
Vietnamese do not learn past mistakes, we keep making the same mistake over and over.
* Coup de tete within Vietnamese groups was a monthly event during the 1960s, we are doing the same thing.
* Corruption is part of the past, present , and future, regardless of which form of government.
* Dictatorship is part of Vietnamese past, present, and future, regardless of which form of government.
* We know how to rule with gun, but not how to govern with reason
* We know how to destroy spirit, but do not know how to build consensus.
* We work against each other for tiny difference.
Chau Nguyen,
It’s more like Nuygen’s feelings are hurt because he can’t get a hard on! hehehhehehe
Quick, somebody let Nuygen know that the man in the first photo is hiding a bottle of Viagra in one of his pockets.
While I laugh at these men, I have give them respect for their commitment, misplaced or not. Haha and rock on!
Your character assassination of these protesters is the same as the character assassination of Brian Doan by his protesters. It devalues whatever argument you put up.
* We know how to destroy community spirit, but do not know how to build consensus *
* Politics of subtraction and division. *
We’ve been talking about the brutality of the Viets (Viet communists are Viets) against the Viets. How about the brutality of the Viets against the Viets 800 years ago?
In 1225, Trần Thủ Độ overthrew the Ly Dynasty (by forcing Ly Chieu Hoang to abdicate in favor of her husband Tran Canh.) He then ordered the massacre of the Ly family members (hundreds of people of the royal Ly families were buried alive while they were worshiping their ancestors) and forced all of its descendants to change their surname to Nguyen, and sent them to the northern mountainous areas. The Tran dynasty ruled for a total of 175 years, ending in 1400 when king Thiếu Đế, then 5 years old, was forced to abdicate the throne in favor of his maternal grandfather Hồ Quý Ly. (History repeated itself!)
Must Read :
** Bến Tre Logic. **
One of the most famous quotes of the Vietnam War was a statement attributed to an unnamed U.S. Air Force Major by AP correspondent Peter Arnett. Writing about the provincial capital, Ben Tre, on February 7, 1968, Arnett said: “‘it became necessary to destroy the town to save it,’ a U.S. major says.”
To this day, “Ben Tre logic” is a common saying for whenever a “logical” conclusion is to destroy something out of the perceived best interests of everyone involved.
Roubini, Richardson, and Greenspan are using Bến Tre Logic.
The US government may have to nationalise some banks on a temporary basis to fix the financial system and restore the flow of credit, Alan Greenspan, the former Federal Reserve chairman has told the Financial Times

Looking at the protesters’ sign, I can’t help but realizing they made a consistent grammatical mistake. They spell “DON’T” as “D’ONT”. Hopefully, they’ll fix that in future demonstrations.
Champha, were you talking to me earlier – February 18th, 2009 at 8:20 am?
Either side is wise .Brian Doan were going back Vietnam to do art project cheaply and the Viets do the protest aggressively in USA .
Before 1975, where were stooges?? Did they fight hard againt the commies?
Re-fight the last war is what the communist and the anti-commie want to do.
True Vietnamese wants to deal with the HERE and NOW.
@Chuot,
It is true that more Vietnamese American artists are going back to Vietnam for materials in movies, sports, performing arts, and arts. (younger generations )
It is also true that protests here are getting more fanatical. (military generation)
If Brian Doan has a right to continue showing his art works, the protesters also have their right to continue their protesting. If anybody wants to protest, go out there & support the protesters. If anybody wants to support Brian Doan then welcome to go to visit the exhibit. As long as both sides doing what they want to do w/o violating any law then that should be the end of it.
@ Exchange :
It is true that uncle Ho girls are so cheap .For a few USA dollars , you can have them posed for a cheap sex art .
@chuot,
Yes, it is true they are cheap there. Also in Bangkok, Manila, and your neighbor Mexico city TJ.
@ Exchange :
Yes, it is so true and they uncle Ho girls are promoted by Viet Nam president Nguyen Minh Triet .He made a speech while visiting USA .

Last year, Comrade Bush asked Nguyen Minh Triet to teach him how to change from capitalist to communist.

USA TODAY 2001 : Sex trade lured 325,000 U.S. kids
By Mark Memmott, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — An estimated 325,000 U.S. children age 17 or younger are prostitutes, performers in pornographic videos or have otherwise fallen victim to “commercial sexual exploitation,” University of Pennsylvania researchers will report Monday.
Their 3-year, $400,000 study is based on research in 17 cities. The work includes interviews with 200 child victims, most already in the legal system, and more than 800 state, federal and local officials. Experts on juvenile law say it is the deepest investigation yet into the extent of the problem. There are 72 million children age 17 or younger in the USA.
“The depth of the problem almost took my breath away at times,” says Richard Estes, a professor of social work at Penn and one of the report’s co-authors.
Among the findings:
The largest group, about 122,000, is made up of children who have run away from home and turned to prostitution or pornography to get money for food or drugs.
The second-largest group, about 73,000, is made up of children who live at home and are used by family or friends in exchange for money, food, drugs or other benefits.
The third-largest group, about 52,000, is made up of “throwaway” children who have been abandoned by parents or guardians and turned to the sex trade to survive.

Hmm, there’s been no sign of a protest. Maybe these paper tigers will be able to stand up straight tomorrow after the effect of those Viagra pills wear off.
Chau Nguyen, that is brutal and hilarious!
Khong biet may dua nho nay con cai nha ai ma bo me khong biet day do ma de cho tui no an noi mat day vay troi ?
Un-believable freedom of the press to promote violent racism :
Racist cartoon on New York Post portraying cop shooting a chimpanzee, while “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill,” the other cop says.
* Association between the chimp figure and Obama is made the bullet holes.
* long history of white racists calling African-Americans “apes” and “monkeys” and, yes, “chimpanzees.”
Freedom of the press is being used to perpetrate violent racism 2009.

Corruption & Lies _ Chicagoan style : Roland Burris.
The benefit of the doubt had already been stretched thin and taut by the time Roland Burris offered his third version of the events leading to his appointment to the U.S. Senate. It finally snapped like a rubber band, popping him on that long Pinocchio nose of his, when he came out with version four.
Let’s see if we have it right: Burris had zero contact with any of Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s cronies about his interest in the Senate seat being vacated by President Barack Obama— unless you count that conversation with former chief of staff Lon Monk, and, on further reflection, the ones with insiders John Harris, Doug Scofield and John Wyma and, oh yeah, the governor’s brother and fund-raising chief, Robert Blagojevich. But Burris didn’t raise a single dollar for the now ex-governor as a result of those contacts because that could be construed as a quid pro quo and besides, everyone he asked refused to donate.
The story gets worse with every telling.

@Muong,
We should teach the young generation to kill commie like the good old days.
I like the smell of gun powder in the morning, burning down straw huts in the afternoon, still have time to go back to Saigon for tennis game at SS.
Who knows where SS is ?
SS was on Hong Thap Tu street.
@Tien nguyen,
You were well connected.

Why expire a life when one should give any person an opportunity to better his/her life through industrious employment? The old ways by either sides are the thing of the past! Human life is very precious and should be valued for potential societal contribution. If I am wrong, please correct me.
@Muoi,
* Blind obedience is preclude for communism and tyranny.
* “An noi cho dang hoang” is totally ignored by “cac ong ba” in Ky Ngo protest, and many other prostests.
* Ong ba is teaching kids that mob rule and intimidation is the way of talking.
* Dung nghe nhung gi ong ba noi, ma hay nhin nhung gi ong ba lam.
Muoi nguyen,

Anyone who considers nudity in Arts offensive is definitely sexually repressed and deserves to be ridiculed. Who knows, they could be sexual deviants in private life. The Catholic priests and the whole institution that supports them are the perfect examples.
@tuanphucnguyen, co phai bo me anh ten la vo phuc nguyen khong?
Chau Nguyen,
You just crossed the line of rational debate to profanity. Your statement should be retracted.
@Muoi Nguyen,
I am sorry for the profanity being expressed recently against you.
I respect our differences of opinion.
I concur with Chau Nguyen. In my humble opinion, Chau Nguyen’s statement is nowhere near profanity, however, it hurts religious and superstitious people.
Oh sh**, I missed all the fun! I was practicing debauchery in San Francisco while those psychos were protesting ART? Who said ART is meant to make people happy only? If you want something that feels good, try to masturbate or go to a karaoke joint!
Anyone could kindly help me to remove the virus I infected from googleanalytics.net? When I first came across your site I thought the virus is yours because of the pop up. Nah, I know that’s not yours but if anyone can provide me a solution I will thanks him millions time.
Its up to the artist how he or she will express and interpret their arts in some ways other people wont see and understand what is the real meaning art, others may also have wrong interpretation on the art object.
Excellent blog very well laid out indeed. I wish mine were as good as yours. Keep up the good work! If I could have your 10% creativity I would be very proud.
