Viet Weekly supporter at Tet Parade

The Bolsavik was looking at the Bolsa Tet Parade photos on EthanNgoPhotography.com and saw this picture. The Bolsavik doesn’t remember seeing the gentleman at the parade but then again it wasn’t as if the Bolsavik was paying full attention to everyone passing by either.

That’s Peter Katz. He is a Vietnam vet and owns a postal store on Garden Grove’s Historic Main Street. When protests against Viet Weekly began, he showed his support for free speech by carrying the magazine in his store.

He’s also a participant in the counter-protest in support of Viet Weekly.

Katz was extensively quoted in a 2007 story in the L.A. Times here:

Katz figures the least he can do is sell the Viet Weekly as a show of solidarity with his neighbor across the street.

Last week, a man with his children in tow plunked down 50 cents and bought a copy. He was immediately confronted by some in the boisterous crowd and retreated back into Katz’s store.

“He was trying to teach his two young daughters not to be afraid to buy a newspaper in America,” Katz said. “He was very shaken up and crying. His girls asked, ‘Why is Daddy crying?’ I got down on my knees and said, ‘Your Dad is a very brave man.’ ”

Then Katz called police, who escorted the family to their car.

Here’s another picture of Peter Katz.

Love the banner Mr. Katz hung. Show those cowards hypocrites what freedom of speech really mean, Mr. Katz.

This is what caring Vietnam Veterans do and will always do when the
truth is distorted, stretched, and subverted from the true cause of
what we represent. Never mess with a Vietnam Vet! s/ A Vietnam Vet.
I also speak for my fellow brothers!
