O what a diff’rence a threat of recall made, to Joseph Cao
Wednesday, March 11th, 2009There’s an interesting (some would say ironic) alignment of the stars in the last two weeks. First, there’s Madison Nguyen’s victory in San Jose, beating back efforts to recall her. And then there’s the signing today by President Barack Obama of the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations, i.e. the national budget.
What do these events have in common? The metaphysical link is Joseph Anh Cao (pictured), the Vietnamese-American Congressman from Louisiana.
You may remember that some people were threatening to recall him (read here), because he voted with his GOP colleagues and against the President’s stimulus package. The recall proponents’ claim is that the stimulus package would help rebuild Katrina-ravaged New Orleans, and local representative Cao’s vote against it is a vote against his constintuents.
Whether or not that is a sin worthy of recall is another issue, but it’s certainly meatier and worthier than the issue of naming a two-block shopping area.
