The pundits examine your past self and compare with your current self and, O what a diff’rence..., gotcha!!! Voters encourage politicians to be consistent, not to grow and change and self-correct, or you “can’t be trusted”. But truth be told, politicians love to talk about the wisdom of duplicity. Sometimes that's how they have to do business since people need the fairy tale to get through the day. “Read my lips: no new taxes” – we all hear that. Reassuring??? If history teaches us anything, it’s that a cretinous simpleton can be a mistake. Some of the people we often admire and praise, like Churchill, was adamant that any negotiation with Mahatma Gandhi was appeasement. He orchestrated a brutal policy of forcibly keeping India a permanent part of the British rule. He was stubborn in his determination to never change. Consistent but wrong!!!
