Van Tran holds presser, appeals to Viet voters

Newly announced Congressional candidate Van Tran held a press conference yesterday where he repeatedly gave what will be the core of his campaign: Three times he said only a Vietnamese would take care of the Vietnamese.

The presser went smoothly, with all in attendance from the various Viet media outlets. The sole exception was “Jubal” Matt Cunningham from OC Blog/Red County.

Van is neither the first Vietnamese-American politician to take on U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez, nor is he the first to use as campaign theme that only a Vietnamese would take care of the Vietnamese.

In 2006, now-indicted Tan Nguyen overwhelmingly beat two other candidates and won the Republican primary with 55.4% of the vote. He too called for Viets to vote for him because “only a Vietnamese would take care of the Vietnamese.”

That theme was also used by just about everyone else, including Tran himself in his first campaign for Garden Grove City Council. Lan Quoc Nguyen, who introduced Tran at the presser, also used it in his campaign for school board.

Present at the presser are almost all of Tran’s political allies, including Garden Grove City Council member Dina Nguyen, Westminster City Council members Andy Quach and Tyler (Truong) Diep, and former school board member Trung Nguyen. Westminster City Councilman Tri Ta wasn’t there.

Republican politicians commonly associated with Supervisor Janet Nguyen, predictably, didn’t come. She was not there, neither was Garden Grove City Council member Andrew Do or Orange County School Board member Long Pham – who challenged the incumbent Tran in the GOP primary in 2006 and lost spectacularly.

    * If California declare bankruptcy, then chances for State legislator Van Tran to win Sanchez’s US Congressional seat could drop drastically.

    * Get real, it is the economy !

  2. OC Voter says:

    Countty First,

    1) A state, unlike a private company or a city and county, is prohibited from filing for bankruptcy.

    2) The Democrats control both houses of the CA Legislature. They have the same color with Sanchez, not Van Tran.

    3) The national economy and the US Congress with Obama in the WH will hurt the Dems next year. That also means LS.

  3. Country First says:

    OC Voter,

    1. Thank you for clarifying the process; is it going to be some kind of receivership once California starts defaulting on its obligations ?

    2. I would think all state legislators would suffer similar political embarrassment, both parties. Comrade Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger has been very bi-partisan in his spendings.

    3. Most of the Obama stimulus package will kick in next year, the second half of 2010, the mid-term election. Who do you think get get all the benefits ?

    4. The flow of the stimulus package very coincide with election schedule

    5. LS will bring home some very juicy chickens, next year.

    6. Right now, many Congress members receive money for job training programs, some for highway constructions…

  4. OC CPA says:

Technically, California cannot declare bankruptcy. But if this crisis reaches the point of insolvency – defaulting on debt – the outcome will look the same, at courthouse.

    Current Governor’s proposals :

    – Eliminating the in-home supportive services for the elderly and disabled.

    – Reducing staffing and services for food stamps, Medi-Cal and welfare-to-work programs.

    – Allowing school districts to contract out for services such as plumbing repair and lawn mowing.

Republican legislators push big cuts in education, health and social welfare spending

Democrats want to enact new taxes or service fees.

Country First, our congress put us in 1.8 trillion debt …..and Obama’s one weekend family event costed taxpayers a $80,000! Enough to pay for one year salary of our mis placed teacher.

Go figure today’s Dem leader’s mentality!

Spend when it’s not coming out of my own pocket!

Thanks Loretta Sanchez …….a high class shopping expert!
Are you still sleeping at 5 star hotel rooms…as long as you don’t have to pay for it ?

California Tax Bases : agriculture, movie industry, technology, and tourism.

All of those industries are tanking with the recession.

** Agriculture : volatile weather and water supplies, coupled with global price’s sharp increases and sudden collapse in the past 12 months.

** Movie industry : costs of production is too high in Hollywood, strict union work rules and city work codes. Most movie stages are now located all over the world such as Bollywood, India.

** Technology : Silicon Valley no longer denotes Northern California’s high concentration of hi-tech firms, but also include China’s Shanghai, India’s Bangalore, Korea’s Gumi, Gernamy’s Dusseldorf, Poland’s Kraków.

** Tourism : nationwide consumer’s sentiments are way down for expensive vacation trips to California.
