A Viet who actually works professionally in the field in which he/she is running for office. Now that’s rare, but has happened before. Education professor Kim-Oanh Nguyen-Lam on the Garden Grove School Board was an example. Now here comes another one.
Hugh Nguyen, 41, is running for Orange County Clerk-Recorder, and not only he has experience working in the office, he’s actually one of the top-ranking professionals in the office.
He’s launching his campaign later today at a Pho place. See his press release at the end of this entry.
Nguyen, whose Vietnamese first name is Hiếu, reached the top of the ladder in the Clerk-Recorder’s office the old fashioned way: He climbed it.
Nguyen started in the office in 1994 at entry level, straight out of community college. By 2006, when he left, Nguyen was the Chief Deputy Recorder.
Nguyen’s current job is as Assistant Clerk of the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
Hugh Nguyen’s father is a U.S. serviceman; Nguyen is his Vietnamese mother’s family name – according to Nguoi Viet here (in Vietnamese). He came to the U.S. at the end of the Vietnam war, as a seven-year-old.
When the Bolsavik told this story, one Viet’s surprised response is, “That position is elected?” Well, yes. Under the constitution of California, a lot of positions heading offices of civil service at the state and county level (like, comptroller, tax collector, recorder, etc.) are elected.
The incumbent Orange County Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly – Nguyen’s former boss – is running for the seat vacated by the termed-out OC Supervisor Chris Norby.
Norby is running for – oh, a coincidence I’m sure – the position vacated by Daly. I.e. the same Clerk-Recorder office Nguyen is running for.

wow, this Viet looks like all-American guy, hum…??
The Orange County Recorder office has been overwhelmed by the numbers of tax assessment appeals.
Mr. Hugh Nguyen could allocate more resources into helping home-owners, with better communication.
County Supervisors are not so keen at reducing property tax, thus loosing a huge source of revenue.
They do not have to institute NEW taxes, as long as they could get away with keeping your OLD taxes HIGH.
Taxpayers, make up, vote for a good guy for a change.
“Mr. Hugh Nguyen could allocate more resources into helping home-owners, with better communication.”
Is there any problem of this type with the current Recorder? If so, what are the problems?
“County Supervisors are not so keen at reducing property tax, thus loosing a huge source of revenue.”
And what does the Recorder have to do with this (hint: nothing)?
This race is going to be a popularity/name recognition contest.
That’s all folks! We need to know more about this candidate .
Whoever can spend more dinero/has big endorsements…. have clear advantage in this election.
It looks like Hugh Nguyen has all good viet leader’s support. ….. adding up on his chances of becoming next viet american recorder in OC.
He may be the right person to earn this position.
* Recorder office should be a place for home-owner to obtain assessment appeal application. They are not currently.
Not Jack,
I did not realize Orange County keeps two separate departments : Recorder and Assessor, not like Riverside county where both are combined into one.
Thanks for the correction.
Now I know why his last name is Nguyen?
Hieu is awesome! He has my full support.
But what about Van Tran and Janet Nguyen? Who is worse? Vote now at http://orangejuiceblog.com/2009/05/van-tran-is-bad-but-janet-nguyen-is-no-better/.
it’s time to bring in a new blood.
Mr. Nguyen has always been a person of integrity and is very sincere with regard to his intent to help the citizens of Orange County. I am sure he will do a terrific job in keeping the Office of Orange County Clerk Recorder ethical and honest with the community at large.
