The binnual Vietnamese-American National Gala – an event that has the cleverly coined which means “gold” in Vietnamese – is taking place in Beverly Hills this week-end.
This year marks the 5th VANG (website here), a gathering of the young and successful Vietnamese from throughout the country. Starting its first year as a shindig to celebrate successful businesses, the event has since expanded and taken on more substantive matters.
This year’s program, for example, include panels of non-profit working, and on empowering the community through politics and law. Many local politicians were invited, including Assemblyman Van Tran, Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen, and Garden Grove School Board member Kim-Oanh Nguyen-Lam.
As a member of the organizing group John D. Tran, Esq. told the Bolsavik, Janet was invited but couldn’t make it. Van initially accepted but had to pull out due to scheduling conflict. That left Nguyen-Lam with a captive audience.
With its high ticket price, VANG has been dogged with a reputation of being elitist. This year, VANG apparently tried to soften it by making the Leadership Summit yesterday free to all students. The gala tonight remains a $250-a-head party - but, if you say you’re with the Vietnamese-American Bar Association, you can go in at $100 per.
VANG retains vestiges of a fun event for those that can afford it. On calendar for this year: A guided shopping trip down Rodeo Drive.

You have these elected Vietnamese-American politicians celebrating in California, telling themselves how great they are, patting themselves on the back about how special they are while Vietnamese-Americans in other parts of the country are struggling (the unemployment rate among Vietnamese-Americans is really high). Just read all the stories about how Vietnamese-Americans feel the need to cheat and steal just to get ahead.

VANG is like a stupid, ugly girl who thinks she can change into a charming, pretty, snobby lady by wearing an expensive dress (that is why they hold the event at Beverly Hills). The result is she (VANG) looks more horrendous, clumsier, and so pathetic!

VANG is a necessary venue to show off high achievements by Vietnamese community, but $250 a pop is a bit too much for the average Joe/Joel to celebrate the occasion.

It was a nice event honoring Viet Ams who have accomplished some remarkable achievements in their lives and who have also given back.
VANG is/was not why we lost the war, how ridiculous! Kim Oanh was there along with some other non-Viet electeds like State Controller John Chiang and Assemblyman Ted Lieu. Westminster Council Tri Ta and his wife attended and sat at my table along with Judge Nho Nguyen. KCAL’s Leyna Nguyen did a nice job as the evening’s MC. Mrs. Bolsavik was there too.
The last time I attended VANG was in 2005 in Washington, DC. Betty Nguyen of CNN and I were co-MCs. This year’s event had about 500 attendees compared to nearly 900 in 2005. The economy definitely had a negative effect on VANG as far as sponsors (Wells Fargo was the title sponsor) as well as many other nonprofit fundraisers.
In 2011, VANG will be held in San Francisco. Xu and Hitman, please join me there.
Mr Quang X. Pham is a gentleman and an officer. His book titled “A sense of Duty: My Father, My American Journey” is well-written with many aspects about us, the war and the new country (he was a helicopter pilot for US Marines and took part in the first Gulf War and Flew other missions in Middle East and Africa, USA …). He is the CEO of a very successful company and a charitable organization to help children, education amongs other things.

VT told him he would run for something else, not Sanchez’s spot, but then announced his Congressional race against Sanchez before PXQ could plan anything. What an ambush! How do I know? Sure I knew, Little Saigon politics’ inner circle is small. Another advice: Please stay away from Viet Tan. Viet Tan is a good financial, well organized group, but it stinks! Most Vietnamese voters hate this group because its fraud in the past that nothing can reinvent its image. Thanks for the invitation to the phony VANG’s gala. As a community we have achieved a great deal in the last 30 years. I am proud to be a Vietnamese American because of all of our achievements. But we still have a long way to go. Our community is having a hard time because of the down turn in the economy. Many of our elders still depend on the government for health care and social services. Our unemployment is high if you consider people working in the construction and beauty care industries. The younger generation does not see the value of a good education as a number 1 priority.
With all this in mind, to have a gala at this time with a ticket price of $250 per is a bit insensitive in my opinion. How many people can afford to pay $250 per ticket when that money is better served paying for rent, mortgage, and bills? If they want to celebrate these achievements with the whole community, why not do so in a way that the whole community is able to participate/afford. It does feel like a bunch of elitists sitting around slapping each other in the back.

Pham Xuan Quang has too much pride when joing the race and giving press responses like he would register as a Republican if Van Tran drops out of the race (how possible?). He thought he is somebody after publishing a book, getting an MBA and being a CEO of his company. Well, that’s quite an accomplishment but remember many others also accomplish something like that.
Take Dr. Tran Hung Phong as an example. He has a degree in medical, then an MBA from the very same school of Mr. PXQ (UCI), and is the president of his own medical group. He’s better known in the community than Mr. PXQ. Or take Dr. Tam Nguyen for another example. He also has an MBA and is the owner and president of one of the largest beauty schools in California (Advance Beauty College). He is also well known in the community. Another example is Dr. Michael Dao, president and owner of Healthcare Systems 2000 medical center. He is very popular, too. The 3 mentioned above individuals are about the same age with Mr. PXQ, earn high degrees in their fields, have impressive accomplishments, and are very well-known. If they decide to enter the race, they would have the same qualifications and resources as would Mr. PXQ. They would have more popularity power, which Mr. PXQ lacks.
I hope Mr. PXQ will be more humble. Remember that “tre`o cao te’ ddau”. It will hurt him more if he is so arrogant, naive, and unrealistic.

While humility is keeping one’s feelings in check, one’s personal vision and the passion to carry it out requires such strong feelings. Perhaps PXQ is approaching the Viet Community like a typical American organization with a take charge attitude and accomplish substantial goals.
The current Little Saigon politics is rather a drain of time wasting waiting for the next guy to do something and outdo or point out his mistake. The approach is the follower mentality. Perhaps the older generation feels that they have nothing to gain and everything to lose, so they would rather ride the tide until their death.
For the benefit of the community, this pool of people should diminish much quicker or get with the program.
While the VN culture has its strength in area of respect for others, it is susceptible to abuse and manipulation for the same reason. Being older and quoting VN sage based on Chinese proverbs somehow makes an older person that much wiser?

The guy who founded VANG actually didn’t care whether or not his organization serves the Viet community, rather than to get attention and accepted from the American mainstream politics so that he would achieve his goal as some sort of political power broke. For this reason, in one of VANG past events (didn’t remember what year) the South Vietnamese flag wasn’t honored during the ceremony, perhaps for fear the RVN defunct flag wasn’t right for the “real McCoy American Gala!” As a result, some of the revelers walked out to protest.
The guy would serve the community better if he continues to sell lunch on wheels to the blue-collar workers in San Jose. Instead, he jumps on “cultural business.” Hey, there is a huge gap between selling fast-food and promoting ethnic culture. Vietnamese has an old idiom “Trưởng Giả học làm sang!” In this case, VANG is much worse than that: “Nhà quê học làm Trưởng gỉa.” :0))) It’s so hilarious to imagine a short Asian guy in tuxedo handing out awards to his country men in a pompous, mimicking Oscar ceremony.
It’s a great mistake for any politician who tries to approach Vietnamese voters by hanging out or associating with such a “monkey-see-monkey-do VANG organization.” Unfortunately, a good guy like PXQ has fallen a victim.
Well, it’s the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and the media presents VANG this way:

This Oscar®-like festivity exhibits the Vietnamese American Community’s celebration of professional achievements and community contributions. The formal black-tie dinner gala brings together hundreds of elected officials, corporate sponsors, community and business leaders, and Vietnamese American luminaries – all who come together to share one common vision: To honor America’s best and brightest. The event will culminate with the highly anticipated gala, which this year take’s place at the prestigious Beverly Hills Hilton, home to the Golden Globe® Awards.”
The gala intended as a means to “celebrify” the recipients, like Neil Armstrong’s declaration as he landed on the moon, it was one small step for Viet and a giant leap for Vietkind.
Tantalizing blurbs like “Oscar-like, black-tie” is a silly tactic pandering to what elitists want. But hey, if I wanted to spend $250 to sit for hours to watch a “blow job”, I’d hire a stripper and have my own.
Everything we do has a ripple effect. The problem with the self-inflating, self-congratulation, few-big-fish-in-a-created-small-pond story conceals within it an invidious statement about the majority of “not-so-successful” Viets: “They made it; why can’t you?”.
As long as we keep talking about what few did, we forget to talk about what many are not doing. The effort to bring together Viets is dynamic rather than static. Taking action on important issues is more valuable than sitting in an audience hearing stories. The successful stories give us the impetus to act, not public therapy.
VANG, not only means “gold”, but also means “yellow” in Vietnamese. The term “VANG deo” (soft gold) is the mushy yellow toxic asset coming out of your ass.

Vấn đề ở đây là tại sao một thanh niên còn trẻ trên dưới 40 tuổi, mới đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ dưới danh nghĩa một du học sinh, mới hành nghề địa ốc mà đã có vốn liếng tài sản lớn như vậy? Nếu không phải là kinh tài nằm vùng của CSVN?! Gần đây Eric Lê còn tỏ ra rất tích cực tham dự vào các sinh hoạt chính trị có ảnh hưởng quan trọng đối với công đồng Việt Nam tại hải ngoại.

Nguyên cáo, Erick Lê, qua Mỹ 9 năm, tốt nghiệp Bác sĩ y khoa tại Việt Nam, khai trước tòa rằng, ông có mẹ từ Việt Nam qua thăm, bị đau chân. Nghe quảng cáo Trung tâm đau nhức có văn phòng chính tại đường Brookhurst, góc Mc Fadden, ông đưa mẹ đến đó chữa bịnh. Bác sĩ Trần Hồng Phong chữa bịnh cho bà. Trước khi trở về VN, ngoài tiền thù lao, bà tạ ơn Bác sĩ Phong bằng món quà, chiếc dồng hồ đeo tay, trị giá trên 2 ngàn đô. Hai người quen nhau.
Từ đó, Bác sĩ Trần Hồng Phong hay mượn tiền của Erick Lê, lần vài ngàn đô. Vợ bác sĩ Phong cũng vay tiền của Erick. Tổng cộng vay mượn là 16 lần, vay rồi trả. Thường trả đúng hạn.
Tháng 11,2004, bác sĩ Trần hồng Phong cho Erick biết là ông kẹt tiền vì đang xây và trang bị máy móc thêm mấy trung tâm chữa đau nhức nên đang làm thủ tục vay tiền. BS Phong cho biết ông phải vay bằng credit card, tiền lời trên 24% một năm. Nếu Erick cho vay nửa triệu, ông sẽ trả tiền lời 15 phần trăm một năm và sẽ dùng nhà ở trên đường Westminster để bảo đảm món nợ. Khi Erick xem nhà, thấy số tiền nợ và giá nhà chỉ cách nhau khoảng 200 ngàn nên không cho vay. Khi BS Phong bằng lòng dùng thêm các văn phòng Y khoa của ông làm tài sản thế chân thì Erick cho vay tiền, 400 ngàn, trả trong 2 năm, tiền lời 15% một năm. Thế chấp bằng căn nhà đang ở và phòng mạch trên đường Brookhurst. Hẹn nhau 2 P.M ngày 24-11-04 tại văn phòng Luật sư Nhuận làm giấy tờ.
Ngày 22-11, BS Phong gọi cho Erick là công việc đang xây cất, cần gấp tiền vì nhà thầu và thợ làm khó dễ. Cần có chi phiếu cho nhà thầu thấy sắp có tiền. Erick ký cho BS Phong chi phiếu 400 ngàn, hẹn sau khi ký xong giấy tờ mới được cash. Chi phiếu đề ngày 24 tháng 11, 2004.
Sáng 24-11, ngân hàng gọi cho Erick là có BS Phong đang ở ngân hàng, muốn cash số tiền 400 ngàn. Erick không cho cash và nói với BS Phong là tại sao không đợi tới 2 giờ chiều như đã hẹn tại văn phòng Luật sư, làm xong thủ tục giấy tờ mới cash tiền. Sau thời gian thuyết phục và BS Phong trao cho Erick giấy nợ có ghi thế căn nhà đường Westminster và phòng mạch, nói là đàng nào cũng sẽ đến văn phòng LS Nhuận ký sau. Erick cho lệnh ngân hàng cash tiền.
Chiều 24-11 như giao hẹn, sau khi lãnh được tiền, BS Phong không xuất hiện. Sau đó, Erick Lê gọi nhiều lần, lần nào BS Phong cũng bận hoặc không có ở văn phòng. Sau đó, người quen cho biết BS Phong cắm bảng bán nhà. Erick không tin, nhưng khi đến thấy nhà đã có cắm bảng bán nên Erick Lê đưa Bác sĩ Trần Hồng Phong ra tòa về tội bội ước và lường gạt 400 ngàn đô, cộng tiền lời, tiền luật sư và tiền phạt. Trước toà, Erick khai mục đích đưa BS Phong ra toà để ông phải làm thủ tục bỏ căn nhà và phòng mạch vào hồ sơ thiếu nợ chứ chỉ ghi sơ sài trên giấy nợ sẽ không đủ để bảo đảm món nợ.
Trước khi đưa BS Phong ra tòa, Erick còn cho BS Phong vay thêm 15 ngàn tiền mặt. Đến ngày trả nợ, Erick đòi và BS Phong chỉ trả 6 ngàn bằng chi phiếu của công ty Phòng mạch. Erick đặt vấn đề là tại sao ông cho vay bằng tiền mặt mà bây giờ trả nợ bằng chi phiếu của công ty.
Bị thưa, BS Trần Hồng Phong thưa ngược lại, đòi Erick Lê thêm 394 ngàn đô nữa, nói là Erick Lê còn thiếu BS Phong. Trong đơn kiện, Counter Claim, BS Phong khai rằng Erick Lê đã nhờ ông cố vấn để mở một trung tâm trị đau nhức giống như của BS Phong. Theo BS Phong, tiền cố vấn là 788 ngàn đô. Ông “discount” cho Erick 50%. Bây giờ kiện nhau, ông đòi lại hết.
Trước tòa, BS Phong kể thành tích của ông gần 3 giờ đồng hồ. Bác sĩ Trần Hồng Phong, 42 tuổi, 10 năm trong ngành Y khoa chuyên chữa đau nhức, có văn phòng Coastline trên đường Brookhurst, kể những bằng cấp ông đã có như bác sĩ duy nhất có Certified Pain do American Acadamy of Pain Management cấp, có nhiều chi nhánh, công tác với nhiều bịnh viện trong vùng Orange County…. BS Phong cũng có MBA, cao học về quản trị thương mại…BS Phong nói về món nợ 400 ngàn.
Theo BS Phong, Erick Lê muốn mở một trung tâm chữa trị về dau nhức vì Erick Lê cũng là bác sĩ Y khoa tốt nghiệp ở Việt Nam, nên nhờ ông cố vấn. Ông đã cố vấn Erick Lê chi phí tổng cộng là 394 ngàn đô. Erick Lê trả dư 6 ngàn nên ông đã ký trả lại cho Erick 6 ngàn.
Khi chánh án James Gray hỏi là tiền để cố vấn Erick Lê bao nhiêu một giờ?, BS Phong cho tòa biết là ông tính thân chủ là 600 đô một giờ. Nhưng ông chỉ tính 300 đô một giờ, discount 50%. B S Phong cho tòa biết là ông đã cố vấn cho Erick Lê tổng cộng là 1,313 giờ.
Một chi tiết nữa trong vụ kiện bội tín và lường gạt là Erick Lê đã nói vời tòa rằng BS Trần Hồng Phong đã là người ăn cắp chiếc Laptop trong xe của ông. Khi chánh án Jame Gray hỏi là tại sao ông lại quả quyết BS Phong đã ăn cắp Laptop của ông, Erick Lê khai rằng, trong thời gian giao thiệp với BS Phong, ông bị mất chiêc computer Laptop để trong xe. Ông mất, ông không dám nghi ngờ ai, nhưng Erick nhiều lần đã cho BS Phong mượn xe, có khi BS Phong lái, có khi tài xế của phòng mạch lái. Nhưng khi trước tòa, BS Phong đem trình tòa một dự án để làm bằng chứng là BS Phong đã cố vấn về dự án này, mà dự án này chỉ có gia đình Erick Lê có. Ngay cả logo trên các văn kiện chỉ một mình gia đình ông có. Dự án này viết trong Laptop và chưa bao giờ in ra giấy. BS Phong đã sữa chữa một số tên tuổi những người đứng tên trong dự án, nhưng những con số trong hợp đồng lại không sửa, mà chỉ có mình ông, Erick Lê, biết những con số này. Lịch sử tòa án, chưa bao giờ một vụ kiện kéo dài 2 ngày mà nghị án 15 phút đã có kết quả 12/12. tức là không người nào trong bồi thẩm đoàn tin lời BS Phong trình bày. Loại kiện tụng này, chỉ cần 9 người đồng ý là đủ số quyết định ai thắng ai thua.

I agree the $250 price tag is a bit steep and will exclude alot of people but i had some friends who attended this year as guests and its funny, it seems like the only people who hate on VANG are the ones who have never actually been to one.
For example, this year i heard the organizing committee made “honoring community and excellence” the theme and did a big silent charity auction and 100% of all proceeds went to some needy charities. Also, VANG sponsored like 20-40 students for free so they can attend.
So we can hate all we want, but at least VANG is trying to do some good and stand for something.
VANG might not be a perfect event (but what is) but in this dreary economic times, i think having it in 2009 was one bright spot in this crappy year…
