A pianist some consider the best Viet pianist of her generation is scheduled to perform at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival in Massachussetts this weekend.
Up-and-coming Quynh Nguyen (Nguyễn Thúy Quỳnh in Vietnamese spelling), currently based in New York City, is slated to perform the Piano Quintet in F Minor by Cesar Franck with the the Biava Quartet, at 8pm on June 27. See the Festival’s web site here.
Back in 2001 or 2002, the Bolsavik was talking with Dang Thai Son, the first Asian to ever win the Chopin International Piano Competition – and asked him about the next generation of Vietnamese piano performers.
And Dang Thai Son said, in his opinion, the next great Vietnamese hope for a world-class pianist is none other than Quynh Nguyen.
Born in Hanoi, Quynh Nguyen (web site here) was admitted to the Hanoi Conservatory at age six, performed her first public recital at age eight, and had her orchestral premiere at age eleven, playing Mozart‘s Piano Concerto in D Minor. At thirteen she received a scholarship to study piano performance at the Gnessin Institute in Moscow.
Nguyen is a graduate of The Juilliard School and of Mannes College of Music. Currently working on her DMA degree, she is also teaching at Hunter College and the International Keyboard Institute and Festival at Mannes.
In 2004 Quynh Nguyen won the Fulbright Fellowship to study with Yvonne Loriod Messiaen (wiki here) in Paris.
The Boston Globe once said (here) of Quynh’s playing: “she knows how to make (the music) dazzle with lively rhythm, piquant inflexions, and dashing virtuosity.”
The Rockport Chamber Music Festival (web site here) is a 5-week celebration of classical music held annually in Rockport, Massachussetts. This year marks the 28th time of this remarkable and highly touted classical music event.

What’s up with the hostility? It’s the timeliness of the information. Don’t you feel terrible to use such language on this blog entry. The subject in discussion is the Beauty, and you’re the Beast. You’re bad bad bad.
I defer this question to the experts. How are these pianists judged? 1) Duplication of note for note from a recording? 2) Their interpretation of a music piece? 3) Combination of both?
If you love your job, you are blessed. If you do whatever you do for a living, you are … among the majority.
When I was a young man, I wanted to play music in a band. I thought it was cool. Of course, often the way it was, the urge to impress women predated having a reason to do so, hoping for one day to meet a woman who would make Carmen Electra just like my hands.
But then one day, I realized it was hard to be great.
In this business, we all learn. It’s just a matter of how and when.
How far back classical music was invented?
In medieval time or prior to Columbus’s discovery of the very land in which we now live?
Certainly, it was created when there were no such things as MTV or YouTube. The problem is we have all those things today. Take a look at any bestseller list these days and you will find there is a very limited audience of people interested in classical music.
I am not suggesting that I put on a fake smile and pretend that I appreciate classical music, just as some people pretend everything is wonderful when it’s not. I don’t watch stuff I don’t understand. Hey, screw you. I watch hot chicks on MTV and Playboy pay-per-view.
If you love classical music, you are blessed. If you love pop culture, you are … among the majority.
Who’s Michael Jackson ??????????????????????????????????????????????
On the topic of music, I heard great music at this great restaurant, Oh, Me Ly, over the weekend. Its address is 16086 Harbor Blvd, Fountain Valley. I know that it has been open for awhile but still worth mentioning. As I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed its different look, and the entry into the establishment confirmed it.
The restaurant has an artsy look and feel about it. The neat thing about it is you can feel the warmth and home oriented atmosphere. I don’t want to reveal too much about restaurant and take away the reader’s surprise. Anyways, the menu is Euro-Asian, emphasis on mostly French. I had Cous Cous and enjoyed every single bite. Meat, vegetable, cous cous, everything was very good.
I cannot recommend enough. Cheers everyone.
