Viet youths caught DWA maybe?

A bunch of young Viets getting caught smoking dope is so routine it normally would not rate even a blip on this site. The following item, found here on the Hunterdon County (N.J.) Democrat, however, got the Bolsavik’s attention for a different reason.

Apparently three Viet youths from Philadelphia were venturing into New Jersey when they were caught and charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, and related violations. Taken into custody were Minh Nguyen, 25; Vinh Nguyen, 23; and Tri Vo, 22.

The reason the state trooper stopped them, however, was because the car they were in had, get this, a burned-out license plate light.

Hmmm, said the Bolsavik. OK so either they looked so obviously stoned, or they were stopped for Driving-While-Asian.

Don’t know enough facts to draw a conclusion, but definitely worth a second look.

By the way, “50 grams” is an arbitrary line drawn in many states’ law to distinguish minor possession. The common explanation is because 50 grams is roughly equivalent to 10 joints.

Not sure if it was a matter of ‘DWA’, probably driving a somewhat pimped out car caught the attention of law enforcement (tinted windows, maybe lowered, maybe with a prominent exhaust).

New York/New Jersey’s really strict about tinted windows; i know this incident happened at night but its definately possible to determine whether a car has tinted windows or not, even at night.

No way of knowing before hand if they were Asians… Can’t see license plate nor occupants faces at night right? Gotta be a legit pull over.
