A Vietnamese-American tennis star has just won an automatic berth to the U.S. Open, reports the Presidio Sports web site here.

Daniel Nguyen, now a freshman at USC, together with his partner JT Sundling won the boys 18s double national title at the USTA Hardcourt National Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Saturday. More on the win at the Kalamamzoo Sports web site here.

The victory gave the pair an automatic berth to play in the main draw of the U.S. Open that starts August 31.

Born in Long Beach in 1990, the 5’10″ Daniel Nguyen is currently a freshman at USC. Nguyen is a 2008 graduate of Santa Barbara High, where he was named the 2008 Santa Barbara News Press Tennis Player of the Year.

Nguyen and Sundling’s win at the USTA National Championships this year is not the first for them. Two years ago, the pair had won the boys 16s doubles there.
