What a difference 10 days make. At the Westminster City Council meeting last night, Councilman Andy Quach issued a somewhat belated but better-than-never apology for his drunk driving, with a direct apology to the people in the 300 homes whose power was cut off when he hit a car and then crashed into a power pole earlier this month.
Gone was any pretense that he wasn’t drunk – like the statement that Andy gave to Viet Bao daily news the day after the accident (pictured): I was “sleepy, because I was working too hard,” he said at the time.
The apology took place at the beginning of a city council meeting packed with people who were there for something else – a resolution naming the last Saturday each April as Boat People Memorial Day.
It was followed by the open communication session, where a small number of passionate people spoke about the Andy Quach drunk driving incident. One of the people who were out eating and drinking with Andy that night was in the audience too.
Naturally, some of Andy’s allies spoke on his behalf. The subtle support would probably have worked, except that Andy then pushed it.
It felt like someone was being too smart by half, when Andy’s own lawyer spoke in his support, without disclosing he’s the lawyer.
Bart Kasperowicz was the last person to speak. He stated that Quach’s actions showed “character, strength, not cowardice,” and praised his client as a man of “integrity.”
Not once, however, did Kasperowicz identify himself as Quach’s lawyer, the same person who came to the police station to get Quach out after he’d been arrested.
As a general rule, you push things too far, and they tend to backfire. Andy and Bart’s little ploy definitely counts as pushing, but whether or not it’s too far, and whether or not there will be an actual backfire, remain to be seen. Things like this tend to quiet down after a while.
a true man of integrity never would have gotten behind the wheel that wasted putting peoples lives in danger in the first place. he has shown to be a person of no standards or morals long before this incident and should resign. he is obviously not fit to hold office.

Many interesting details would show the clarity, the unfolding of events and the roles of many people involved.
my biggest question is why the cops didnt fully disclose the 3 people in the other car that andy quach almost murdered with his car with his drunkeness and bad judgement. i still think van tran was drunk too.
Andy Quack should have to pay restitution for the city’s cost for law enforcement, fixing the electric pole, inconvinience to the 300 residents, and for being an embarrassment to our community. If Andy Quack had any integrity, he would just step down from his role as City Councilman and crawl into a hole never to be seen again. Van Tran should do the same as well.

I left the meeting late last night, rather disappointed. You failed to regain control of the situation with your simple and lame apology, reminding the public of the current political theater replete with personal indiscretions and hypocrisies ( R. Senator John Ensign of Nevada, South Carolina R. Governor Mark Sanford ).
An apology without acts of contrition is so anti-climatic . Your lawyer speaking without proper disclosure of his fiduciary association might cause more damage. You botched a golden opportunity to issue a plant of actions for redemption. You shall make financial donation to Mother Against Drunk Driving (MADD), you shall attend DUI school, you shall visit victims of drunk driving accidence in hospital. It is very possible to rehabilitate your image in about a year. A plan of actions would shift media attention from your regrettable accidence to future more favorable events of community services. I wish you well.
i agree jung kim but as far as the pole and fence and the car he has to pay for all of that he cant get out of it. just like he has to go to AA the courts will make him. another question of mine is will he plead guilty? he is after all guilty lets see if he’s man enough to do it. i think he’s not.
country first i hate to break it to you but what andy quach did was far worse than anything ensign and sanford did. those guys screwed their wives over quach almost killed 3 people in a drunken stupor. when you’re so stupid as to get behind the wheel of a car in that condition makes that car in the hands of a drunk a weapon. quit worrying about his image his image is shot except to those sheep in our community who will continue to vote for him and defend him. and comparing him to a senator and a governor is pretty lofty comparison he is after all only a drunk counciman.

Let’s take a break from the local politics and share a very enjoyable dinner at a Viet restaurant in Long Beach.
On my way home, I was facing tremendous traffic jam in Long Beach around dinner time, so I decided to take a detour. This city street tour of Long Beach led me to Pho Long Beach (511 West Willow Street, Long Beach, 90806).
This restaurant was the only VN one around for miles. Being that it was dinner time, I decided to come in and test the culinary skills of the local LBC Viets.
What a surprise. Not only does the restaurant serve Pho but it commands an extensive array of other Viet, Viet-Chinese, and Thai dishes. The servers and host were courteous and nice in dispensing advice and taking orders. Of course, I ordered their specialty, Pho.
The dish was authentically wonderful and tasty. I also ordered a coconut drink along with the meal, and what I received was a complete surprise. The coconut had the top lopped off, and a long handle spoon accompanied the drink. I ate the coconut inner lining while drinking the sweet juice.
After the meal, I had dessert and chose the grilled banana with ice cream. It reminded me of the long days back in ‘Nam (for the Rambo viewers) how this dish was served with coconut milk, rather than ice cream. The family and I would stroll along the beach side and eat at the numerous street vending carts…oh the good old days.
I did not know that the LBC has a VN community, so I asked the workers there. Lo and behold, our Little Saigon entrepreneurs have traveled northward on the path of Viets less traveled to try their hand in a less saturated location.
After paying for the meal and leaving more than the customary 20% tip because these people went above and beyond, I walked out the door and heard the locals (not-Viets) praising the workers for the wonderful Pho. They expressed their apprecation that the restaurant served an affordable authentically exotic (and high quality food) experience that can be had at any time.
I cannot say enough about Pho Long Beach and wish the restaurant the best.
PS When it comes to Pho, the broth is the most expensive part of the dish. One way to serve it economically without sacrificing the quality is to serve it in a conical shaped bowl because the noodle is shapeless and needs enough to keep it moist with some broth leftover for sipping.
