A Vietnamese woman, her son and her niece were hit by a rolling driverless car and had to be hospitalized for serious injuries, reports KTRE TV here.
The accident occured on Sunday as the family was having a picnic at Lake Nacogdoches, a popular fishing and recreation area in east Texas, roughly halfway between Dallas and Houston.
Kim Pham, 42, suffered serious damage to her legs and internal injuries, and requires extensive surgery. She remains in the ICU. Her son, Samuel Pham, 3, is also in the hospital. A niece, Hazel Nguyen, 3, of Houston was released from the hospital Monday.
The niece’s family from Houston was visiting Mrs. Pham’s family in Nacogdoches, so the group went for skiing and picnicking at the lake. They were gathered around a concrete picnic table when a car began rolling out of the parking lot into the picnic area.
The car slammed into Mrs. Pham from behind, crashed the picnic table, and the concrete table fell on her and the two children.
Mrs. Pham’s legs were badly damaged requiring surgery, her husband Peter Pham told KTRE. Interal bleeding delayed further surgeries.
Their son Samuel also underwent surgery and will undergo a second surgery.
The niece had debris removed from her eyes.
“Everyone should recover, but it was frightening. All the children cried all night and couldn’t sleep,” said Peter Pham.
Sad news!!! Any info on the whose car it is? will there be any potential lawsuit to recover for damages?
Sad news. My prayers are with the Pham family.
Oh crazy! I went to college in Nacogdoches and know all the Viets in that small town, including the Phams. My thoughts and prayers are with them.
