It’s Annie ‘Lê’ not Annie ‘Lee’ – says Leyna Nguyen

Leyna Nguyen, the KCAL-9/KCBS-2 newscaster, disclosed on her Facebook that she went against the wishes of her producer and writer and pronounced the missing Yale graduate student’s name correctly as ”Lê” (or ‘lay’) rather than “Lee” like all other newscasters are doing.

So far, the posting has received 41 “Like”s including one from John Quoc Duong, the former executive director of the White House Initiative on Asian-Pacific Americans.

One commenter, Mai Xuan Bui, the publisher of the fashion/entertainment/shopping/beauty magazine 13 Minutes, wrote, “Leyna, we can always count on you to do the right thing. Thanks.”

  2. Anon says:

I’ve heard it both ways. I think those who don’t know just go with their best guess.

  3. jd says:

why the hell producer and writer goes against the wish of Annie Le (Lay) instead of Anie Lee (Li)? we know why, it’s all economics and political. that’s stupid.

  4. redhead says:

I heard it pronounced LEE on CNN and by the cops and everyone else, and it bugged the hell out of me. Then, a few days later they started pronouncing it right. I’m glad Leyna stood up for it. Represent!

  5. Jung Kim says:

    Good job Leyna.

  6. Tâm Lê says:

Some takes for granted that Le (Lê) is Lee, that Asians are Chineses. Some even writes down Lee in place of Le on legal documents. And many have a so hard time pronouncing Nguyen (Nguyễn), almost struggling to death to say ” Nei …Eln “.
I wish that Americans were more sensitive. We are a diverse community, yet many hardly pronounce properly many other people names; even when their work involves providing services to those clients of theirs. That somehows shows some disrespect.
