When push comes to shove, the sole Vietnamese-American in Congress proves he can buck partisan pressure. In the final House vote on health care reform, Rep. Joseph Cao broke with his GOP colleagues and voted for the bill.
And so it was that when health care reform passed the House 220-215, mostly along partisan line, Cao was the only Republican to vote for the law. Thirty-nine Democrats voted against it. Roll call on the Clerk of the House web site here.
Earlier, the former Jesuit voted for an amendment, offered by Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan, which would restrict abortion coverages provided by private insurers. It passed (see roll call here) 240-194.
Abortion is a huge issue for Rep. Cao. He is on the record saying he would vote against any health care reform law that had a mandate for abortion coverage. Cao said:
“Being a Jesuit, I very much adhere to the notion of social justice. I do fully understand the need of providing everyone with access to health care, but to me personally, I cannot be privy to a law that will allow the potential of destroying thousands of innocent lives,”
With that gone, it cleared the way for just not Cao but a number of conservative Democrats to vote for the law.
The measure now heads for the Senate.
Mr. Joseph Cao is definitely the man…more Americans need health care. How can the “richest” country in the world not help its own people? Keep voting your conscience for the right reason and time. Go go go Mr. Cao!

Mr. Cao’s initial opposition was based on his own individual religious belief; then he quickly realized that he is a high priest but a mere politician.
Is it within religious realm to let insurance companies deny coverage millions of people with pre-existing conditions ?
Is it moral to stop medical coverage for millions of the unemployed ?
Is is a problem of our capitalist system that medical costs in Japan is only 1/10 of that in America ? we should just let Japanese medical companies come here and manage our health care.
Who is getting all the money in medical expenditure ? One hint, not the medical service providers
