Pho – the price of popularity

You know the Vietnamese noodle soup Phở has arrived, when you see that people are starting to mess with it.

What’s the Bolsavik talking about? It’s like this:

You know pizza has gained popularity world wide when you can find, as the Bolsavik did in Tokyo (pictured right), pizza topped with … poached eggs.

You see, the more popular you are, the less control you have over what people do with you.

Vice-versa, you can’t be sure your national dish is popular internationally, until other countries start taking your dish and re-making it in their image.

So, it’s with something of a bittersweet feeling when the Bolsavik found this version of Phở:

Curry chicken phở!

The picture was taken at a food court on Bristol. The Bolsavik tried to order it – but the owner, who appears to be Korean, said they don’t offer it any more.

But the spicy shrimp phở is still available, she said.

I say more fusion = more goodies to enjoy. Without Marco Polo’s travels to the east, there may have never been pasta, spaghetti, linguini, etc

  2. Where exactly, Bolsavik?!

While we’re on the topic of curry, ca ri ga (sorry for the lack of diactrics) is one of my all-time faves…

  3. An Tran says:

And while I’ve at it, the topic is Curry which is of Indian origin. Man what would the rest of Asia do without Curry!

  4. Jung Kim says:

One thing is for sure… our pho is becoming famous international dish.

  5. NL says:

Why don’t you include “Pho… ron ren”, anh Nhiên ;)

  6. yum yum says:

Bolsavik, is that Bristol Street in Santa Ana?

  7. FOB says:

Its the only good thing that came from the north…LOL!
Yes I hate northerners, its in my family’s DNA.

  8. junk king says:

Ehh, as long as I can get a real bowl of pho at the Viet restaurants around town, then it’s all good. It’s Allllllllll Good!

  9. Hot Fat Mama says:

FOB, your family got serious defective DNA ! LOL …

  10. SwineQueen says:

I agree with Hot Fat Mama. Regional discrimination is childish & primitive. You can hate certain indiduals and certain things, but a blanket hatred is dumb and narrow minded. There must be something wrong with FOB’s DNA.

  11. FOB says:

Looks like we got some damn northerns here in the states….If you want to know the vietnamese north/south dynamics just go ask one of your elders
otherwise slurp that broth and smile LOL!

  12. ELO says:

Pho, like the people of its creation, is not different from other noodle soup of other cultures. What makes it unique is its delivery to the palette. Whether prepared by the regional people of not, the dish strikes up the spirit of the VN people, and it is judged not in a singular vain but in the final overall form.

The evolution of its refinement comes from millennium of influence of other cultures and ethnicity but still remains true to the regional identity and symbolizes the spirit of the regional people. What is important whether the dish is served with a slight twist or completely off mark is that Pho contributes itself as another viable hearty meal to the American people, just as the people who created it contribute to their new land…

  13. Jung Kim says:

I need to have pho at least once a week.
This is my favorite meal… specially during the cold winter season.

First of all, i have to say you picked a pretty good name FOB because your english shows that you are fresh.. Second, you and your family are very ignorant and uneducated. Also, i wonder how many times you’ve visited Ha Noi or how many friends you have with parents or relatives from northern vietnam FOB? is your family full of hypocrites FOB? LOL… Oops, i think you shoud go look in a mirror and laugh at yourself FOB.

  15. FOB says:

I don’t mind saying, “my english is poor” what’s the big deal. After all I did take ESL. I read your post JustDaFacts, a 4th grader can write it also, using big words doesn’t show me/us you’ve mastered the language.

Back to the topic north vs south; my entire clan, all + 100 strong is from the SOUTH! Once again, ‘WE DO NOT LIKE THE NORTH’.

    Just deal with it.

  16. JustDaFacts says:

Two words for you FOB… grammar classes. I have a question for you FOB. Why is it always the uneducated ones that tend to be narrow minded and wrongly stereotype people and are so easily brainwashed and are always followers like you FOB? I guess there’s always some bad apples in every bag and you just happen to be one of those with a worm inside.

  17. FOB says:

My clan lived & fought during the civil war. We hate the north with passion. The FACT that you can’t understand IT tells me a lot about your profile. Enjoy the american life- I do.

    You’re a young buck I forgive you.
