After 27 years as one of the top Viet entertainment companies, Thuy Nga Paris, the producer of the widely popular ‘Paris by Night’ variety show, may be closing down as soon as this summer, said the man who founded the company and whose daughter still runs it.
To Van Lai, 73, told Viet Bao Daily News here that video piracy is eating so badly into the Thuy Nga’s income, it can only try to reach the landmark 100th show, then go out of business. In fact, today, Thuy Nga had a rehearsal for its 99th show, so we’re talking about only one more show.
According to the paper, To revealed that while one Thuy Nga show – an elaborate music, dance, and comedy show, mostly featuring artists lip-synching to their own soundtracks – can cost $1.9 million to make, ticket sales only add up to $700,000. The shortfall must be made up by DVD sales, and piracy kills that.
Viet entertainment companies rely heavily on sale of videos of their shows for the majority of their revenue. With Viets dispersed throughout the country, with no single community having more than 300,000 people, live shows don’t have a large enough audience. (Think what happens if no town in the U.S. is larger than Boise, Idaho.) DVD sales are a must, but if DVDs are copied and ripped and posted online, sales suffer. The online pirates are not too discrete either – the Bolsavik found this site with just one Google search.
That’s true of all Viet entertainment companies. The more people want their DVDs, the more they hurt, and people want Thuy Nga the most.
Mr. To estimated that 30 million people worldwide, a huge chunk of whom are in Vietnam, watch Thuy Nga DVD’s but only 50,000 buy genuine copies.
The silver lining, though, is that Thuy Nga is practically guaranteed to sell out its last show, scheduled for July 4 in Las Vegas. Like a dead artist’s paintings that go up in value, nothing sells tickets like a farewell show. In fact, there are singers in Vietnam who went on farewell show after farewell show after farewell show, all heavily attended.

The Paris By Night series is an excellent entertainment turned infotainment regarding the US culture and lifestyle. Local Viets need to control the piracy, so this type of show can go on.

Video piracy is NOT the main reason Paris By Night is in the hole, the center of entertainment is slowing shifting back to Saigon, not Little Saigon.
Paris By Night producer over-estimated sales, without regards for economic condition, and over-spent on production costs.
It is difficult for Paris By Night to rely on ticket/video sales, they do not have a TV network to generate more commercial revenues. It is their business model that is inadequate.
Blaming on lack of audience is just being disingenuous, or even decade old problem of piracy.

They should learn how to sale the DVD in cheaper price. Nobody want a burned copy if they can buy it at $10.00 a piece.

May be, this is just an introduction for the future news of a “buy-out” or “take over” by another group of investors…The illegal copying of DVDs is a bad practice but it is not new and it has been around for many years now. How did PBN survive in the past and to now if they did not make any profits? LOL.
i’m just glad i dont have to watch that crap at certain restaurants i eat at anymore. i swear the music used to make me almost lose my appetite. but i rose above and finished my food anyway.

Ông Tô Văn Lai có biết rằng, ông đã xúc phạm cá nhân tôi, đồng đội tôi và QLVNCH không? Nếu như gia đình ông trong nằm trong những người tỵ nạn CS và được chúng tôi cứu về thì ông sẽ biết ông đã làm một việc thất đức trong cuộc đời của ông đó.
Tôi nghĩ ông cũng là một người không sống nổi với CS thì xin đừng làm những gì có lợi cho chúng.

To Van lai is a lier. He has been said this for years to close down Thuy Nga by Night. The show just repeated the old things and nothing news. A production does not cost that much. Mr. To does not have to pay for all the singers to perform on his show. Matter of fact, I hear those singers need to please him in order for him to allow them to perform on the show. Then how does it cost show up? His MC Ky Duyen has a bad communication. In any rate, the show is not worth it to watch. It is time for you to move on with a new business.

While the ladies watching Paris by Night they love to comment about the singers’ hair dos, fashions and how old, how young, how pretty, how ugly they look…nobody really care about the music, well it is too loud, from the drinking table, to enjoy the singing anyway….

Thuy nga needs to look how the produced their shows in the early 1990′s…they were so much better than today’s ugly bad music.
and as a business major, they need to change the name PBN, its not fitting with the show and company,there’s nothing “Paris” about it anymore, but until they stopped filming their shows in Paris back in the day. Their corporate culture doesn’t look great.

@Phu Huynh: Nực cười ông quá, tôi là thế hệ lớn lên sau chiến tranh tại Việt Nam. Giờ đây Internet cho chúng tôi cái nhìn nhiều chiều về quá khứ. Ông đừng cố mà khơi dậy cái thây ma đã chết cách đây 35 năm lên, ảo tưởng quá. Điều ông nên làm là tạo sự kết nối cho thế hệ trẻ Việt Nam trong và ngoài nước để họ hiểu đúng về nhau hơn thay vì reo vào đầu họ sự thù hằn dân tộc. Như thế là tích phước cho con cháu ông rồi đấy. Sống mãi trong thù hận hẳn ông nhắm mắt cũng không thanh thản.
