Just as the Bolsavik finished talking about how OC GOP voters usually don’t think carpetbagging is such a big deal, lo and behold a GOP bigwig proved the Bolsavik right.
The OC Weekly (here) has the story about how Assemblyman Van Tran squeaked by first-time candidate Quang X. Pham for the California Republican Assembly endorsement for the CD47 race. He did it by having his chief of staff – a resident of Sacramento – vote out of the Stanton chapter.
If it weren’t for the carpetbagger, there would have been no endorsements.
The Weekly quoted Tim Whitacre, the group’s parliamentarian, as saying CRA bylaws allow a member to join “any branch he wants to join regardless of where he lives.”
So there you have it. Party activists sanction carpetbagging. That’s why it’s no big deal.
Personally, the Bolsavik believes there’s a method behind this madness – that there’s a reason for allowing carpetbagging. Unlike the GOP as a whole, the CRA is the conservative wing of it. The party as whole may want to win races above all; the CRA may be unwilling to sacrifice ideology for the sake of victory.
If you want to win races, you may want to make sure the people voting on endorsements reflect the local electorate.
But, if you want to enforce a viewpoint, geography will have to take a back seat. Allowing activists to cast ballots where votes are needed is one way to prevent any one particular chapter from veering too far off the ideological line.

In politics, the main thing is to win elections. Unfortunately, the rules by which elections are organized are established by the very ones who get elected. Also, there is no difference between a senator or congressman who did an extremely dirty campaign and one who did a honest, positive campaign. Once elected, the two are equal in congress/the senate.
As a consequence, it is not the most honest who gets to win, but the one who does all that’s necessary to win. So the ones willing to … use flexible principles have an edge over the ones who stick to their principles and don’t do anything immoral in order to win an election.
As a consequence, the political class is formed mostly of people shy of no compromise, for which winning any competition is their most important guiding principle. The ones for which ethics are more important don’t get too high up in politics.
That is, in my opinion, why politicians are generally viewed as corrupt and unethical.
