Former candidate and now federal criminal defendant Tan Nguyen is jumping in and making a splash in an already colorful contest for the Republican nomination to face incumbent Democrat Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez in the 47th Congressional district.
Nguyen is scheduled to go to trial on May 3 on charges of lying to investigators. But, hey, he’s innocent until proven guilty, so he’ll take his shot at Congress thank you very much.
In announcing his candidacy, Nguyen sent out a bilingual press release to Viet media. The press release (uploaded here) was sent out just like that. It is written in the first person, but doesn’t carry a signature. It doesn’t have a letterhead or address or phone number, just the typed words in Vietnamese “Campaign offices of Tan Nguyen.”
Already running in the Republican primary are California Assemblyman Van Tran and former U.S. Marine officer Quang X. Pham.
Tan Nguyen, as many people remember, overwhelmingly won the Republican primary in 2006, getting 55.4% of the vote in a three-way race. Going into the general, Nguyen’s campaign sent out a letter that’s commonly interpreted by Democrats and Republicans alike as threatening U.S. citizens of Mexican origins that they can’t vote. The Governator Schwarzenegger (still popular back then) called it “appalling,” OC GOP leader Scott Baugh said he didn’t believe Nguyen’s denial, and all the Vietnamese candidates who only a month earlier had taken a joint “solidarity” campaign photo with him (Van Tran, Janet Nguyen, Lan Quoc Nguyen, etc.) all jumped ship.
The State of California prosecuted him. After the prosecution had begun, Nguyen’s supporters gathered in front of his campaign office and sang “Stand by our Tan.” That’s the video above.
In 2007, the new Attorney General, Democrat Jerry Brown, thought it was no-harm-no-foul and voluntarily dismissed the case.
In 2008, however, the U.S. Justice Department under Republican President George W. Bush indicted Nguyen. The case is still pending.
In his newest press release, Nguyen blames his problems with the legal system on Loretta Sanchez and “her cronies.” He says he believes Sanchez “has been one of the most inept and corrupt politicians in Congress” and he’s “here to replace a corrupt politician who, for nearly 14 years, has done nothing for the people of this district.”
