Janet Nguyen to celebrate anniversary of first win

Marking the end of her third year in office, OC Board of Supervisors’ Chairwoman Janet Nguyen today will hold a “3 votes in 3 years in March” fundraiser at the restaurant that’s the staple of her campaign, the Azteca in Garden Grove.

The 3-3-3 fundraiser refers to Janet’s winning the 2007 Special Election to replace then-Supervisor Lou Correa who had been elected to the State Senate. Janet Nguyen, then a Garden Grove City Council member, went to battle against Assemblyman Van Tran‘s protege Trung Nguyen, at the time a Garden Grove Unified School Board member. The first count gave Trung at 7-vote lead.

Janet asked for a recount, and she ended up as the certified winner by 7 votes as a result of the recount.

Trung then took her to court, where at the end of trial on March 26, 2007 the judge cut Janet’s lead down to 3 votes, but that meant Janet still won. She was promptly sworn in the next day. In the photo above, that’s her US Marine brother to her right and her husband Tom Bonikowski, now a Garden Grove Planning Commissioner and is the proud owner of his own controversy.

Trung Nguyen appealed, lost that, and the California Supreme Court declined to hear the case.

The defeat left Van Tran and his allies so bitter, in the 2008 election to the full 4-year term, they took to attacking with the ultimate smear – calling Janet a communist. Here and here, for example.

The red-baiting didn’t work, she won anyway.

Janet’s invitation follows the jump. Fittingly enough, the per-person price is $333.

  1. Westminster Voter says:

Mr. Van Tran should have known better by putting a slut against a real politician. If he’s smart, he should stay away from those losers like Andy Quach & Dina Nguyen. Their bad reputation will only dragging his good name down with them.

  2. Two years, two opponents says:

In 2012, Janet will be facing Jose Solorio and Quang Pham.

  3. TIM666 says:

Selfish, arrogant Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen, whose real ” boss” is her Chief of Staff Andrew Do, acts like the communist regime in Vietnam, which has stiil kept a tight control on Vietnamese people’s political lives; she wants to use the Black April commemoration of the fall of Saigon to communism, one of the most important events in Little Saigon, to polish her image in Vietnamese community and limit the attenders to her friends and supporters only (300 people compared to more than 1,000 last year). Claiming to be a Republican, but she ha strong support and endorsement from many labor unions and democrats, and that is why there is a big fight for power between her and Phu Nguyen, the establishment-backed Democrat for 68th Assembly District seat, who has accused her of labeling him as a “communist”, a taboo in Vietnamese community.

Janet Nguyen also voted against proposed restaurant rating systems in December 2008. “Supervisor Janet Nguyen opposed any change to the system, saying restaurant owners already face “hundreds of regulations,” according to the Los Angeles Times. It turned out that Nguyen had a reason to vote against the ratings. “Her husband and chief of staff are co-owners of a sandwich shop in Stanton and she reports income from her husband’s food-related job on her public disclosure,” according to the O.C. Register. Nguyen’s husband, Tom Bonikowski, and Chief of Staff, Andrew Do, co-own a Lee’s Sandwiches franchise, according to the Bolsavik blog. “Inspectors found major and minor health violations (pork stored at improper temperatures; signs of vermin) at Bonikowski’s Stanton franchise this past July. In fact, all of the Lee’s Sandwiches listed in the county’s database have been found to have major and minor violations during inspections this past summer,” according to the O.C. Weekly. Nguyen also collected over $12,000 from over 20 restaurants and food companies in 2008. Many of these businesses have been cited for health violations, according to the Orange Juice blog.

  4. MIT999 says:

Quit being naive! Both Trannies and Jannies are taking money from the communists. Do you expect them to look away when money is playing a big role in how they are going to win? Money change everything, even the people.

  5. Jung Kim says:

Arturo, why are you so upset with Janet?

Art, are you planning to run for something this November?

  6. Just .... Asking? says:

Janet Nguyen has always been a bitch, still is, and continues to be one. She has not changed a bit. This bitch is dumber than a rock.

She will get beat in 2012. Janet Nguyen is divisive and stupid to boot.

  7. Art Pedroza says:

    Jung,

No, I am not running for office again. Promised my wife I would stick to blogging.

I used to be friends with Janet. In 2008 I ran for the Santa Ana City Council and asked her to stay out of the race. The next day she endorsed my opponent, Carlos Bustamante. She then called me that Friday and asked if I wanted to meet her at Azteca for a few beers.

Needless to say I wrote her off after that and have been kicking her ass ever since.

  8. Ho chi Vinh says:

all conservatives are sore losers and they all red bait anyone with a different point of view then them and call them commie. No wonder nobody votes them in any more. Trung and Van Tran are both corrupt right wingers and Vietnamese willl no longer vote for those cronies.

Subject: Request to revoke intend-to-meet permit granting Supervisor Janet Nguyen

    Madam and Sirs,

My name is Nguyen Hung, a Vietnamese American Activist, Freelance Journalist/Reporter also member of Tet Parade Foundation. My business is located in Westminster city.

I am here, tonight to request the Westminster City Councils to revoke the “Intent-to-meet permit” which was granted to Supervisor Janet Nguyen. Reasons for this request is false or mislead information on the application. In the past, there is no Black April event ever holding the crowd of less than 500 people, especially at Vietnam War Memorial. Black April commemoration also is not an event to keep all VIP have to keep their mouth shut, I meant no sound permit.

I know that in trying to resolve the matter, City Manager Don Lamm and Police Chief Mitch Waller have worked very hard. I am also aware that the City of Westminster is facing a tough decision on this controversy. As you know all the efforts are failed. Why, I am here to tell you and clearly clarify that Black April commemoration is the event of Vietnamese Community and it should be left to the community to resolve internally.

Nobody, even elected official, can step in and take over this event from Vietnamese Community. We’ve suffered too much after April 30th, 1975 following the Fall of Saigon. Many soldiers died in Vietnam War, many people died on the sea, in the jungles, prison camps and so many families were ruined afterward. We, Vietnamese community, organize this event together every year to remember those who lost their lives for us to be here today. This is a Vietnamese event, so no one can claim or organize this event as an individual regardless who they are. Since Tony Lam, the first Vietnamese-American became elected official as councilman until today, there are many other Vietnamese American elected officials like Van Tran, Joseph Cao, Hubert Vo, Janet Nguyen, Hoang Duy Hung, Dina Nguyen, Andrew Do, Andy Quach, Tri Ta, Tyler Diep and so on. But there is no one has stepped up, I repeat no one ever step in to claim this event from Vietnamese Community, except Supervisor Janet Nguyen who used her elected official position for her political gain purpose.

Supervisor Janet Nguyen got our tax money when she ordered her employee Matthew Harper to use his administrative working time as Orange County salaried employee to file the application for this event on April 30. I believe this event is not on the Orange County Supervisor Board’s official event calendar. So I strongly request Supervisor Janet Nguyen to withdraw her application and return it, the Black April Commemoration, back to our community.

This is not threat, but as Vietnamese American voters, we will use our voting power in the next election. We may lose this event today, but we will tell the world by our decision on election days in the future. Last week, Andy Hung Xuan Nguyen won County Commissioner seat in Tarrant county Texas from an incumbent lady.

Thank you very much for your attention. God bless America and all of us.

  12. Bo May Da Thug says:

Janet is a bitch and she got bitch slapped all month long for trying to secretly steal the Black April conmemoration. The bitch deserves to be slapped senseless.

  13. pissed off says:

I wonder if the OC Supervisors have “slush fund” accounts like their counterparts from LA County (to the tune of 3.5 mil per year per supervisor)? If they do have the same kind of dos then I think Janet should spend some of that cash fixing herself up a bit; maybe lose some weight and do something with the face. I went to the same high school with the broad back in the ’90s and she was always a heavy set woman but man since she took public office she’s been packing it on. Since her public persona isn’t worth that many votes may be she can try a different approach: sex appeal maybe? There bound to be a couple guys who will go for her….I mean vote for her.

  14. OC Voter says:

“This is not threat, but as Vietnamese American voters, we will use our voting power in the next election.”
Well, whatever that was it sounded like a threat to me. And whichever way Janet goes, Nguyen Phuong Hung and Van’s gang are not going to vote for her anyway .. in any election.
