Responding to the photo to the right, originally posted on the Orange Juice here, Assemblyman Van Tran yesterday sent out a press release disclaiming the “Jail Tan Nguyen” he was holding.
The picture, taken at a Tea Party event, shows Tran holding a small sticker which calls for putting his opponent in the primary elections in jail.
When news of the picture caught the attention of Vietnamese voters, however, Tran’s campaign sent out a press release (here, in Vietnamese) to counter it.
In the press release, Tran’s office says, “On Thursday, he was invited to join a demonstration by the ‘Tea Party’ movement. All of a sudden, an American he doesn’t know pulled out a small sticker with the words ‘Jail Tan Nguyen’, gave it to Assemblyman Tran in front of a crowd and asked to take a picture. The whole thing happened in a flash.”
The statement says that Tran took the sticker “to be courteous,” and later he threw it in the trash.
The sticker’s sentiment is a reference to the pending prosecution of Tan Nguyen, the 2006 GOP nominee for the same Congressional seat, accused of lying to a state investigator who then allegedly repeated it to a federal investigator which supposedly makes it a federal case.
Tran calls the Orange Juice Blog a “left-wing web site with a tendency to oppose and frequently spread false news about Republican Vietnamese elected officials.”
Tan Nguyen, reached by phone, said Tran called and talked to him, saying he didn’t mean it, “and I believe him.”

Van Tran hold a sign when he was asked to do so and posed for pic.
