Bay Area Viet man accused of killing wife with hammer

A Vietnamese-American man accused of bashing his wife to death with a hammer will stand trial for murder, a Bay Area superior court judge ruled Thursday, according to the San Francisco Appeal here.

Jeff Nguyen, 42, of San Leandro, reported finding the body of his wife, 37-year-old Mai Banh, in their hair/nail salon in the city’s Marina District in 2007. Police later determined that she had been killed the day before.

However, when homicide inspectors searched the couple’s garage, they found what’s been described as evidence that “appeared to contradict his initial statement to police denying any involvement.”

Nguyen was arrested eleven days after the killing, and he later admitted to attacking his wife. He had found out she had a boyfriend and intended to divorce him.

Nguyen is to be arraigned on July 9.
