Dozens of body shop people, four of whom are Vietnamese-American, are carted off to jail on charges of insurance are, announced the Orange County DA’s office here, just two days after they announced the prosecution of doctors and a lawyer.
The people prosecuted this time are charged with agreeing to cheat insurance companies by charging for work done unrelated to an automobile accident. The 4 Viets caught among the 53 defendants are: John Ngoc Hoang, at Orange County Auto Body Works, on Westminster near Newhope, in Garden Grove; Dean Nguyen at Hi Tech Auto Collision in Anaheim; Minh Anh Nguyen, at #1 Auto Body And Repair on 17th near Fairview, in Santa Ana, and Michael Tran, at Salem Auto Body on Weststate in Westminster, right on the side of the Asian Village Mall (Phước Lộc Thọ).
Disguised as a customer, DA undercover agents would bring in a beat up car. One is a Ford Expedition and the other a Mercedes Benz E430. They’d tell the body shop person something like this, “The damage back in the rear was caused by the accident, but not the damage to the front. But can you fix both and bill both to my insurance?” Apparently, the majority of body shop estimators would follow the law and say no – according to the DA’s press release.
Well, not that much of a majority. In 152 undercover operations, 53 shop estimators said, “OK, if that’s what you want.” Those 53 have been charged.

i have a story of fraud i’ll share with you. about 4 years ago i rear ended a mini van belonging to ann nguyen on hazard street it was such a small dent but we agreed to handle it ourselves and not involve our insurance companys. we exchanged information ann didnt have her drivers lic. with her which is illegal but i didnt make a stink about it because after all i hit her. well about 4 hours later her husband calls me wanting my insurance information and i tried to explain to him that we agreed to handle it ourselves and the guy just flew off the handle and started yelling at me. then i hear from her attorney because ann nguyen was now claiming she was hurt! (her attorney was on brookhurst also i’m wondering if it’s the same people on the other story) so i contacted my insurance company something i didnt want to do but i figured i would have to now and i pleaded with them not to let her get away with this because it was obviously fraud. she also never showed up for her appointment with the body shop my insurance company scheduled for us to document the damage but they did tell me my estimate for the damage on my truck: 37 bucks. i declined to have them do the work and i bent the lic. plate back the way it was to save 37 bucks and that was that. the whole process lasted 2 years and in the end ann nguyen who at the time lived on townsend st. in santa ana (a real shithole) ended up with a 500 dollar settlement after racking up 5 grand in medical expenses. i had to change insurance companys because my rates went up after the accident but i ended up saving almost 500 bucks a year with another company so it worked out good for me but i did keep in contact with the person handling my claim because it’s important to know what is happening in these types of situations where a person is obviously trying to defraud an insurance company in your name. looking back on it of course i should have called the police to make a report she would have been cited for no lic. and probably would have gotten her van towed but i never would have thought she would have sunk so low as to even try to pull something like this. the thing is i’ll never not call the police in any kind of fender bender regardless of how small after this experience. too many people are just too dishonest.
