The primary elections in California yesterday produced results that were as predicted. However, many outcomes had unexpected shades, foreshadowing a not-so-normal general elections for the Fall.
Van Tran, Phu Nguyen won, Madison Nguyen heads into the runoff the leader, and Tan Nguyen, Joe Dovinh, Long Pham lost, and in San Jose so did Thomas Nguyen. No surprises there.
But, at closer look, there are a few surprises, raising interesting questions.
First, there’s the winning margin. Van Tran, the three-term Assemblyman and darling of the GOP establishment, won just exactly 50.0% of the votes. Will the disgruntled Republicans who would rather throw away their votes Tan Nguyen and Katherine Smith‘s way sit out the general elections?
Phu Nguyen beat Joe Dovinh 57.7%-42.3%. The unexpected strong numbers posted by Dovinh shows that negative campaigning still works. In the two weeks preceding the primaries, Dovinh went on the air nightly and accused Nguyen, who runs the family money-remittance business, of being a communist or communist sympathizer. If red-baiting can help a non-entity like Dovinh, what will it do for a candidate who has some actual traction?
In San Jose, Madison Nguyen leads the field for her council member seat at 41.77%, not enough to avoid a runoff. She will face challenger Minh Duong in the Fall. Duong’s campaign has been severely damaged by cannibalism among former recall-Madison friends, many of which of Duong’s own doing. Now, really, how much forgiveness is in the air?
Another former recaller, Thomas Nguyen, got trounced in his quest for the mayorship. Incumbent Chuck Reed got an overwhelming 76.66% of the votes in a field of four.
Magdalena Carrasco, the city council candidate smeared by a fake flyer featuring the Vietnamese comunist flag, got into the runoff with 34.34% of the votes; the leader Xavier Campos had 35.96%.
Another surprise showed up in the small print: In the race for the Republican central committee, AD 68, all Viet candidates lost. Republicans went for an all-non-Viet slate. OC Supervisor Janet Nguyen ended at 7th place in a race that chooses 6, and the bottom 3 vote getters are all Viets, including incumbent Tyler Diep, the former Van Tran staffer and current Westminster City Councilman; fellow Trannie and Garden Grove City Councilwoman Dina Nguyen; and Jannie and Garden Grove City Councilman Andrew Do. Over in the AD 69, another incumbent Viet member of the Republican central committee, Cuong Sinh Cao, also lost, ending in next-to-last place. Time will tell how this anti-Viet sentiment among GOP activists affect Tran’s race.

Regarding Phu Nguyen vs. Joe Dovinh, it is not that negative campaigning works against Phu, voters just did not trust him for his past and present activities. The man lacks a substantive record. He will lose in Noember. Just look at the numbers. Just don’t add up for him.

except Jane Nguyen and Phu Nguyen.
All other Vietnamese-American candidates are not worthy to trust.
Van Tran should have no chance to get elected in the fall, and he does not need
any more money as he already pocketed enough money from ‘per diem’ deal from
the State Assembly job.
It was more than 130 dollar/day tax free every day for all the days he was in the Assembly office whether he was in Sacramento or in Orange County.
The sponsorship of the drunken Westminster city councilman would net Van Tran extra campaign
contribution, which permits him to use it in anyway he likes.
Most of them are crooks and try to take advantage of the Vietnamese-American votes by
running for the office for the sake of being Vietnamese origin.
For the peaceful mind, don’t vote for any Vietnamese-American for the sake they are
Vietnamese origin.
You should be only worried about Loretta’s job security. People are upset with Loretta’s bad track record on finances and attack on innocent baby lives!

Put your money where your mouth is… run for office or actively support another candidate if you’re not happy. The time spent doing that would be more worthwhile than sitting on you’re a–es and trashing other people personally and not on the merits. Upset no upset…what’s the difference? News concerning Orange County is straight forward and not opinionated.
Just on the results, this race has proven a few things.
1. Van Tran has long ago evolved beyond the Little Saigon community and into the mainstream. Janet Nguyen is to follow. The numbers are indicative of mainstream support. What’s important about Tan Nguyen’s result is that the immigration issue is still hot and a lot of Republicans do not like Loretta.
2. You can run a campaign based on grassroots support like Joe Dovinh (support came from the voters and not party endorsements or paid ads and mailers). Bolshevik should learn to be a good reporter and check with Little Saigon Radio 106.3 FM to see, to the contrary, how much Phu has paid to launch a negative campaign on Joe the last 2 weeks. Assuming what Bolshevik said about Joe is correct and both candidates had access to the Vietnamese radio broadcast for last two weeks, is Bolshevik eluding from the fact Joe Dovinh is the better politician? Despite the results, Joe is a new leader to the Vietnamese Democrats. You can stat that Bolshevik.
3. The Unions can help Phu Nguyen spend a whole lot of money to win over the mainstream voters, but, to win over his own Viet community he must be more transparent and direct. Sending his father to address the issues posed by his own community is an insult to those want to know his true standing on certain issues. His father has made statements which are in conflict with the statements that Phu has made to the Registers. Phu assumes that people who follow Vietnamese news don’t follow mainstream news. Only the mainstream voters who do not speak Vietnamese may have been fooled by Phu’s statements in the Registers and his campaign flyers. He took advantage of the mainstream’s lack of understanding and access to Vietnamese Press. If the mainstream voters could understand all the Vietnamese news releases and postings on Vietnamese blogs and blast emails concerning Phu, then he may not have received the current results. Phu’s strategies towards the mainstream are strikingly similar to those of Bolshevik’s.
4. With the numbers which came in for Mansoor, it looks like Alan is going to take the 68th Assembly seat. Joe got lucky. Phu is now stuck between two hard rocks (pull out and face ridicules from the Democratic Party and the Unions or face Mansoor and lose the race and whole lot of money?). Of course, if Phu loses, the Unions would have nothing to lose. At this point, Phu is on cloud 9 for winning, but who wants to be Phu when he wakes up and realizes that he has just spent a lot of money to benefit people and businesses connected to the party (printers, consultants, campaign manager(s), mailing houses, etc). That’s not the end of that, and what about the money to be spent against Alan? No one from Phu’s camp is going to lay it out for him like this, because they all may have something to benefit from Phu’s campaign.
5. From the numbers in the primary for Phu and Joe, Loretta and Lou should be looking at the emerging group of Vietnamese Democrats who are not willing to work with the Phu & Phu (Do Nguyen) gang. They do pretty well on their own without the money or endorsements from the party. It’s a matter of time who will reach out to them first. Loretta may lose a number of Vietnamese Democrats in the general election.
Some elementary questions will be answered if they can be further clarified. What exactly is acting like a Trannies or a Jannies?
What is the purpose for grouping? Do each and every member of these groups do exactly the same thing or many things? If yes, what specifically (date, time, place, and event) do they all do that are the same? What exactly did each of them do that is unworthy or causes no trust. Please be specific and tell us the source as well.
These groups appear to be of two politicians. What about the other politicians who actually have many members in their groups (Scott Baughies, Lou Correaies’, Lorettaies, Just Askingies, Jamies, etc).
Politics concern rights and very serious matters to the Vietnamese community. Don’t throw out just any question or statement. Particulary questions and statements meant to undermine the Vietnamese-American people and community. If anyone needs a stress vent…calll 2-1-1.
Check out the latest vote count from the OC Registrar this evening. Van Tran is now at 54%. Looks like the more they count, the higher margin Tran wins by.
Other Viet candidates also made grounds in the late counts. What does that say about Viet voters? Viet voters still like to support Vietnamese candidates. The numbers bear that out clearly.

There is very little doubt that this Primary result should put to rest those people who still make noises about Vietnamese voters not vote for Vietnamese candidates. The numbers don’t lie. Anyone arguing differently is just being stupid.
