A Vietnamese-American community activst is running for the state legislature in Maryland, reports local paper The (Gaithersburg) Gazette here.
Each district in the Maryland House of Delegates actually elect not just one but maybe more than one delegates. Democrat Hoan Dang is running for District 19; the district has 3 delegates, all Democrats, and two are not running again.
The latest news on Dang’s web site boasts endorsements from a city council member and a delegate from another district.
Dang has been on the Board of the Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association for a decade or so, and its chairman and president from 2001 to 2009. The MVMA is an immigrant-assistance community group serving not just Vietnamese but other ethnicities as well.
If history is a guide, though, serving the community rarely translates into getting the votes. (All the current Viet electeds in OC have zip community service in their past anyway.)
An electrical engineer with two master’s degrees – an MBA and an MS in operations research – Dang was community advisor to the Montgomery County Executive and the Maryland Attorney General. He’s currently a compliance analyst at a Fortune 500 company. The MVMA web site identifies the company has Lockheed Martin.
The district Dang is running on is 50% white, 17% black, 12% Hispanic, and 11% Asian. It lies in Montgomery County and includes Aspen Hill and such other places as Four Corners and Gaithersburg.
Dang is currently one of four people who have put their names in the for two open seats in the district, all on the Democratic side. More may sign up. The primary is not until September 14.
I think he is a real deal:
-He is a Democrat.
-Intelligent.
-Come from a good school (not a degree from a third-tier law school).
-He represents people from all ethnic background and does not sale himself to the viet community.
-He does not have a street thug army under his command.
People of District 19 should cast the votes for him, people of all ethnicities….not just Vietnamese.
He is a real deal for American citizen of Maryland… why O/C county does not have anyone like him?
