‘Vietnamese bounce’ in primaries lifts candidates

As has been shown in several elections in a row, a disproportionate portion of Vietnamese-American voters voting for Vietnamese-American candidates cast their votes by mail, and do it near the last day. This phenomenon has many times resulted in Viet candidates who may be losing on election night ending up winning the election. (See this, for example.)

That so-called “Vietnamese bounce” happened again on Tuesday’s primary elections. A number of Viet candidates who posted so-so numbers on election night ended up with a lot more respectable results, and some who first lost have now won.

First, there’s Van Tran‘s winning margin in his quest for a congressional seat. From a barely-there 50.0%, Tran reached 54.3% by today. Fellow Viet candidate in the same race Tan Nguyen also improved a bit, from 19.4% to 19.8%.

Perennial candidate Long Kim Pham, running for the Republican nomination to the Assembly, still lost, but by less disappointing numbers. He climbed from a super-low 26% on election night, to a much better 30.2%.

On the Democratic side for the same Assembly seat, the Vietnamese bounce got divided between the two Viet candidates.  However, the one who got more of the founce – i.e. the one more Vietnamese voted for – is winner Phu Nguyen, increasing his lead from 57.7% to 58.4%, and the same Vietnamese voting bloc dropped Joe Dovinh from 42.3% to 41.6%.

In the Republican Party’s race for the county central committee, AD 68, OC Supervisor Janet Nguyen, who was losing on election night, is now in the win column, placing 4th in a race that takes 6.

Still not making it is incumbent Tyler Diep, who came up short at 8th place. Also still not winning, despite the Vietnamese bounce, are Garden Grove City Council members Dina Nguyen and Andrew Do. And in the AD 69, incumbent Cuong Sinh Cao may make it after all, leap frogging Lupe Moreno and now sitting 119 votes ahead of her, at 6th place.

The Vietnamese bounce may be good news for some, but does not bode well for people running in districts where the Vietnamese-American votes are not enough to tip the balance.

  1. Ho Chi Vinh says:

Joe DoVinh is a phony. He is one of Van Tran’s people infiltrating and disguising himself as a democrat so he can try to ruin Phu Nguyen by splitting the Vietnamese community because our community is easy to split using dirty tactics by conservatives i.e calling them a commie. That tactic doesn’t work anymore but they keep trying it. Same thing goes for their white counterparts, the white conservatives better known these days as the Tea Party. Be smart people, don’t let these conservative morons manipulate our community.

  2. Phu Nguyen will get Trounced says:

    @ Ho the Dead Commie:

Nguyen is a phony and he will lose. The numbers don’t add up for this empty suit in a GOP area.

Phu Nguyen is a nobody and he is close to the commies. He will lose. Phu spent over 100k and he got this to show for. One word comes to mind … Weak! Let’s spend more money kids. It’s daddy’s money!

  3. Phu Nguyen will get Trounced says:

Commie baiting is not neessary for Phu Nguyen. He is already doing business with them. Where’s the bait when the fish is right there for all to see. Ho Chi Minh is Dead!

  4. Ho Chi Vinh says:

Indeed, Phu probably has no chance in this district full of conservative extremist low class dirty right wingers. But he is young and just getting started. It will be great experience for him and he will take it with him for the future. This fact has the old timer conservative extremist anti communist nutjobs shaking in their old military boots. He is a threat and he is the future of Little Saigon and they know it. After a few years, all the old timer VNCH nuts will die and a new generation of Vietnamese will be in conrol of Bolsa so enjoy right wingers. You only have a few more years left. :)

  5. Dead Uncle Ho says:

Phu is the future of Little Saigon? More like the future of Ho Chi Minh City. Give me a break. You are fooling nobody Uncle Ho.

  6. Ngo Dinh Diem says:

He is the future and you losers know it. Thats why you are scared and cannot come up with an educated reply.

  7. OC Voter says:

Diem Ngu, if you haven’t realized yet …. your handle is named after a dead guy. If you want to scare people you might want to try a different strategy. Just look at the face of what you have called ” the future ” … what do you see … the pirate of the Bolsa town ?

  8. Phu the Future? Just kidding says:

    Hey there No Ngo:

Phu Nguyen is the future? I thought for all you baby killing liberals and Democrats Obama your Mama is the future. That’s the funniest line I have heard all week.

Phu Nguyen reminds me of Jim Belushi from Animal House, but he’s not nearly as funny as Belushi. But Phu is a joke though.

  9. Observer says:

I’m not a Phu supporter, but it’s obvious the Trannies and Jannies are scrared of Phu. Little Saigon politics will be drastically different if he wins, and especially if Van loses. Imagine the paradigm shift?

  10. Just Asking ! says:

I’d be scare too if any of my representative is looking like Phu. Everytime I see his picture it reminded me of all those horrible story about Thai pirate. How could you trust anyone with a face like that?

  11. Phu Can't Win says:

    Observer,

Phu can’t win and he should not waste his parents’ money for the vanity of elected office. He is not electable. He will lose at the polls and he will lose his life’s savings. The Dems need someone to be a sacrificial lamb and Phu is it.

  12. Phu' Nguyen Will Lose says:

Who’s scared of Phu Nguyen? Nobody. But he looks scary. Don’t you agree?

Phu Nguyen cannot win. It is a mathematical and a political impossibility. The numbers and registrations tell all.
