Viet voters prefer Boxer for Senate: Poll

OK, so that headline should have an asterisk. Because that’s how the survey results were qualified.

The Field Poll in a recently released survey, here, says that incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (pictured, left) has a 3-point overall lead over GOP challenger Carly Fiorina (right).

What may be the first time for the Field Poll, though, is that the company took the trouble of conducting the survey in six languages and dialects, including Vietnamese. And among Viets, Boxer supposedly holds a whopping (asterisk) 32-point advantage

Conducted by telephone from June 22 to July 5, the pollsters talked to 1,390 registered voters, of whom 1,005 are considered likely to vote in the upcoming November general election. The survey was conducted in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and Vietnamese.

The published results (on page 5) shows that among Vietnamese-American likely voters, 55% prefer Boxer, 23% prefer Fiorina, and 22% are undecided or have other choices.

The results for Viets, however, came with an asterisk, and the * says: “Small sample base.” The table shows that Viets account for only 2% of the survey sample.

Over the past sixteen months The Field Poll has conducted five statewide surveys pairing Boxer and Fiorina in the Senate contest. While Boxer is still ahead, that’s a far cry from the 30-point advantage she once enjoyed back in March of 2009.

The candidate preference question, asked only of likely voters, was: “In the election this year for U.S. Senate, Republican Carly Fiorina is running against Democrat Barbara Boxer. If the election were being held today, for whom would you vote for U.S. Senate – Republican Carly Fiorina or Democrat Barbara Boxer?”
