Gen. Nguyen Cao Ky (left) and Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu (center) at the first anniversary of their 1965 military coup, a day they made into South Vietnam's Armed Forces Day.
The military coup that ended the last civilian government of South Vietnam was honored by the Costa Mesa City Council at their regular meeting last Tuesday night.
The date, June 19, was the Armed Forces Day of South Vietnam, so named to honor the anniversary of the installation of the military government of the Republic of Vietnam, headed by Gen. Nguyen Cao Ky and Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu.
The previous civilian government was under Head of State Phan Khac Suu and Prime Minister Phan Huy Quat, who had been installed by the military in the first place. In 1965, when the military imposed a new charter in place of the Constitution, Head of State Suu resigned in protest.
That protest didn’t quite work out as planned. Claiming the resignation was voluntary, Generals Ky and Thieu took over the government.
On June 19, 1965, the new military government was sworn in, with Ky holding real power as Premier and Thieu as figurehead President. (That would later change, when outmaneuvered Ky to gather power into his hands.)
Starting the next year, 1966, the day was named the Armed Forces Day (“Ngày Quân Lực” in Vietnamese). In the top photo above are Ky and Thieu at the 1966 parade honoring the first anniversary of their rule.
And by the way, Ky is now accused by some of being a commie and a turncoat, after he returned to live the rest of his old age in Vietnam.
And in the photo to the left are former members of the South Vietnamese military who came to the Costa Mesa City Council meeting to hear their coup anniversary honored as a Remembrance Day by the council. They may or may not have been involved with the coup, but who probably fondly remember the days when the country was in military hands.

folks, see what I mean?
Thanks for your reply Bo May, I am always interested to hear different perspectives.
I would disagree that the Buddhist religion was heavily inflitrated by communist agents although I do accept that most Viet communists were Buddhist. Buddhists did oppose the oppressive Catholic Diem regime of early 1960′s and were labelled as communists or communist sympathisers for doing so.
The minority Catholic Vietnamese population for the most part represented the priveledged elite in SVN. On the other hand Buddhists represented the vast majority of the population. It was easy enough to brand them as “communist” as a way to support minority Catholic rule of the majority Buddhist population.
I would especially disagree with your statement that “Buddhist, Catholic and every other religion in Viet Nam right now are suffering more oppression than ever.” I dont think opression of Buddhists in the early 1960′s by the Diem regime is comparable to anything that is currently going on in Vietnam.
I have lived and worked in Vietnam with NGO’s and have seen churches being built, congregations going to mass, people buried in Catholic ceremonies. There is no opression of Catholic’s in Vietnam other than those who speak against the government. The government is especially wary of Catholic “agitators” because of the association of the Catholic Church with the VNCH regimes.
I dont believe Buddhists are suffereing any opression other than those that speak out against the government. I would agree that religions do not enjoy the level of freedom of speach that we enjoy in the West but I wouldnt state that there is a blanket opression of religions in Vientam, rather that those individuals that speak out against the government are oppressed.
I think overseas Viet communities have a tendency to overstate the level of oppression in Vietnam today, the dark days of 1970′s and 80′s have long since passed and the future is looking much brighter for Vietnam.
Junk Kim go get a life you republican religious moron. Da dao con cac. Your great president GW Bush and his idiot administration fucked up our country for centuries you moron. Go protest Carl’s Jr or something for having the commie flag as their logo.
Non Viet and Bo May,
Are you kids done stroking each other’s carrots? Bo May is a certified anti-viet Viet racist. And Non Viet is a know it all buffoon, who really doesn’t know Jack.
Reading your sorry excuse of a post is like
a deaf man trying to lead a blind man. Both of you know nothing about Vietnam but likes to claim your expertise. Maybe in seconds grade.
To Perspective:
I appreciated your eloquent writing on the matter. If I could be short and precise:
‘…I would disagree that the Buddhist religion was heavily infiltrated by communist agents although I do accept that most Viet communists were Buddhist….’
There are no evident to prove either way, however, we can make some safe best that, all the upraising in the poor sectors of the population must have been financially supported, guided and maneuvered by a well oiled machine behind the scene.
‘…I don’t think oppression of Buddhists in the early 1960′s by the Diem regime is comparable to anything that is currently going on in Vietnam…’
The communist party has total control of the media and many acts of oppression have been done in secrecy.
Thanks for your reply Bo May, I accept the points you made.
And I respected yours, even though we have different views.
Wish all viets at home and aboard can do the same.
Yes. We all agree,
Communism = Dictatorship
capitalism = greed.
“communism is evil, but there is one other form of government that is more evil than communisim, and that is capitalism” – Pope John Paul II
It’s incomprehensible that as of today many people are still proud of the shameful event. Some people live in the U.S. for many years, but never understand that the concept of civilian control of the military is a pre-requisite to a democracy and is provided in the U.S. Constitution.
A little reminder would be appropriate here:
Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution states that Congress shall have the power “to raise and support Armies …” and “to provide and maintain a Navy.” In addition, Congress must provide for the state militias when they are called to federal service.
Article II, Section 2 states, “The President shall be the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States when called into the actual Service of the United States.”
And a little example of civilian control of the military is illustrated by President Truman:
“General MacArthur was insubordinate and I fired him. That’s all there was to it.”
